What's New in District 5
Town Hall Meeting
Join me at my next town hall meeting on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at The Phoenix Club .

Anaheim's Director of Community Services Larry Pasco will be there to talk about all the latest projects and information about our Parks and Recreation programs.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to rsvpanaheimdistrict5@gmail.com .
Open House at the Hive
Serving as a hub for nonprofits, the Anaheim Hive opened last month.

It features common areas desks, work stations, private offices and meeting space.

The Hive is a partnership between Anaheim Community Foundation and the Samueli Foundation.

Coffee with a Council Member
Thank you to Zov’s Bistro for graciously hosting my recent Coffee with a Council Member event. Our featured guest was Fire Chief Pat Russell.

We had a good turnout of residents who stopped by to say hello, share their neighborhood concerns and, of course, enjoy delicious coffee and treats.

Thank you to everyone who attended.
El Verano Groundbreaking
Last month we celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for El Verano, which will provide 54 affordable apartments for seniors on East Lincoln Avenue, the site of the former Sandman Motel.

Innovative Housing Opportunities has partnered with Anaheim Housing Authority to provide a site for this much-needed housing. Seniors are our fastest growing population and often they are living on the edge of homelessness.

I’m also very happy to see the Sandman Motel, previously a source of blight and police calls, be transformed into a valuable asset for one of our most vulnerable populations.
Tacos and Conversation

I joined our Community Policing Team for “Tacos with a Cop” at the Northgate Market at East Street and Romneya Drive.

APD hosts these events across the city regularly, giving our residents a chance to meet their local officers, ask questions and express any concerns.

I’m always happy to meet our residents. Thank you to our community partner, Northgate Market, for hosting the last two events in District 5.
Giving Back

It was an exciting Give Back day for our community last month.

I was able to work with our local waste recycler, Republic Industries, to arrange the donation of one of their surplus trash trucks to the town of Penjamo, located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. It’s estimated that there are over 3,000 Anaheim residents from Penjamo and thousands more from Guanajuato that call Anaheim home.

To celebrate this donation, we held an event at Mariscos El Governador restaurant, including food, cold drinks, music and dancing and a visit to Anaheim from several Guanajuato and Penjamo government officials.
Improving the Neighborhood
Video: Anaheim Coves
You may have already taken advantage of the beautiful expanded trail and play area at Anaheim Coves.

Check out this video recap of our ribbon cutting celebration.
Public Works Tour
Last month, I had the opportunity to tour our Anaheim Fleet Services Yard where most of the city’s equipment is stored.

Anaheim is a full service city, meaning we have our own Fire, Police, Public Works, Parks, Libraries and Utilities departments. The types of equipment that is maintained is wide.

Of special interest to me was the Wood and Metal Shops where we still have craftsmen building specialized projects.

I also visited our traffic signal shop where the city is working with a number of equipment manufacturers to develop the infrastructure necessary to facilitate the use of autonomous cars in the future.

I enjoyed meeting all the professional staff that are very proud of their contributions to our city, even though you may never see them and what they do behind the scenes.

Around the District
What's Cooking?
Happy First Anniversary to local popup business What’s That You’re Cookin’?

Eder and Stephanie Rojas are experts in Salvadoran cuisine, with a lot of family experience under their belts. They were recently serving up some delicious pupusas at District 5's own Backstreet Brewery.

Having run stores myself for many years, I know the courage it takes to start a small business and the first year is the hardest.

Congratulations to Eder and Stephanie and thank you to Backstreet Brewery!
Congrats Graduates
Congratulations to the Orange County Family Justice Center (OCFJC) Ambassador Program Graduates.

These 11 teens participated in leadership and mentoring classes for several months by creating a variety of service-learning projects to raise awareness for different causes.

I ’m so proud of these leaders of tomorrow and thank their parents for the support they gave them in this program. The OCFJC is making a positive influence in the lives of our families.
Welcome Brewery X
Welcome Brewery X to District 5! They are located in a former aerospace manufacturing building, a fun reuse of a space that had outlived its former life.

The “X” in their name signifies the crossing of paths; their customers as well as their ownership.

I visited the project several months ago when it was just an empty building, some great drawings tacked to a wall and several dedicated business owners.

To the credit of our Planning and Building Departments as well as Anaheim Public Utilities, this project went from drawings to reality in a little more than nine months.

There are more than 20,000 small business in Anaheim. They are the lifeblood of our local economy.
