Greetings!

Start the Roaring Twenties – 2020s, that is – with Kent and some great music: his first Cathedral organ recital in two years; a musical celebration of Earth Day, Bach and Schubert with students of the Manhattan School of Music; and a new critical edition of Brahms’s choral masterpiece A German Requiem at Carnegie Hall.

The Great Organ of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine is still being repaired, but the season of recitals is in full swing using a digitally sampled Aeolian-Skinner instrument, and Kent will perform a program of Bach, Vierne, and Bruhns on January 28. (If you are wintering in or around Sarasota, Florida, join Kent for his organ recital and Evensong at the Church of the Redeemer Episcopal on January 19.)

On February 10, the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine and the early/world music ensemble Rose of the Compass join for This Fragile Earth, a celebration of the 50 th anniversary of Earth Day with a musical “celebration of flora and fauna.” Kent leads his students in the Manhattan School of Music Symphonic Chorus & Chamber Choir in a wonderful program of Schubert’s Mass in E-flat Major and Bach’s Magnificat on February 25.

And on March 2 Kent leads the Oratorio Society of New York in the U.S. premiere of a new critical edition of one of the masterpieces of choral music, Brahms’s A German Requiem ( Ein deutsches Requiem), with soloists Susanna Phillips, soprano, and Takaoki Onishi, baritone, at Carnegie Hall.

Exciting news on the recording front : the Naxos Records CD of the Oratorio Society of New York performance of the Paul Moravec/Mark Campbell oratorio Sanctuary Road has just been released! The live recording of the acclaimed 2018 world premiere performance at Carnegie Hall features Kent leading the OSNY chorus and orchestra and soloists Laquita Mitchell, Raehann Bryce-Davis, Joshua Blue, Malcolm J. Merriweather, and Dashon Burton. You can buy the disc or download here!
