Mitchell Associates Architects contributes to the FEMA guide "Safety and Health Considerations for the Design of Fire Emergency Medical Services Stations."
The FEMA guide, "Safety and Health Considerations for the Design of Fire and Emergency Medical Services Stations" is an important reference guide for organizations that need to design emergency facilities. The reference guide identifies design guidelines, makes recommendations for improving safety inside emergency services facilities, and evaluates existing stations for safety and health.

Mitchell Associates contributed to the Guide in Chapter 4: "Overview of Design Process and Applicable Construction Components" where  photographs from stations designed by our firm are shown to demonstrate how  training elements can be integrated into the station.

How to Build a Proper Decon/Laundry
Bob Mitchell will present two seminars at the F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium on September 24, 2019 in Raleigh, NC.  "How to Build a Proper Decon/Laundry" will focus on the safety and decontamination of firefighters, their PPE, vehicles and equipment. Designing proper laundry/decon facilities has been a key design concern, as increases in cancer rates among firefighters is becoming more prevalent. Using NFPA1851 Guidelines, Bob will walk presentation attendees through the decon process, moving through various steps from dirty to clean. Topics will include:
  • How the proper sequence of decon steps defines the work flow, and how the layout supports that.
  • How to plan for the physical and mechanical requirements of the equipment.
  • How isolated does the decon/laundry need to be from the rest of the station?
  • What surfaces and materials work best.
  • Personal showers and the decon room.
  • How to handle contaminated station wear.
Bob will also be presenting a lecture "Your Old Station - Should You Knock It Down?" This seminar will discuss the pros and cons involved with renovating your existing station or building a new station, the steps you should take to make the decision, and will give examples of how we have evaluated conditions for our clients in the past.

T he Decon/Laundry seminar will occur in the morning of the 24th, and the Renovation/Building New seminar will occur in the afternoon of the 24th.

Memorial Bells are on their way to Yonkers
Bells are being delivered to the Yonkers Fire Department 's new fire station, which is currently under construction. MAA has been involved with with this project as a firematic consulting along with our partner  Highland Associates (Architect of Record) . The Memorial Bell Tower will honor the 200 year old fire service tradition known as "the Ringing of the Bell." The bell ceremony remembers the departed firefighter and commemorates coming home for the last time. The warm color of the Corten steel used in the design adds a traditional appearance to the steel's inherent strength, while at the same time keeping maintenance to a minimum. The rendering shows what the memorial bells will look like once they are in place. Construction of the station is scheduled for completion in the late fall. Read more about the Yonkers Fire Station project.
