Celebrate Vaughan Small Business Week this October

Small Business drives Vaughan. In fact, 81% of all businesses in Vaughan have under 20 employees. There are more than 7,400 companies in Vaughan with under ten employees, which constitutes 61% of all business in Vaughan. 

Ahead of Small Business Week for 2019, BDC surveyed Canadians on their views on entrepreneurship. Nearly 90% of those surveyed agreed that entrepreneurship is important for Canadian economic development, and Canadians said that entrepreneurs are brave, courageous, hardworking and innovative. 

Vaughan Small Business Week is run every October as part of the nationally recognized celebration of the contributions small business makes to our economy.  A new partnership agreement to support local innovation will be announced at this year's Small Business Week, which will further establish Vaughan as a hub for entrepreneurship, talent and innovation.

Activate Vaughan! for a sustainable future

Sustainable transformation requires collaboration between established businesses and start-ups with big ideas. The City of Vaughan invites businesses of all stages to join the Activate! Vaughan Innovation Network and to collaborate on disruptive business ideas that will advance sustainability in key industries. 

How you can get involved this Fall:  
  • Pitch your solution: Activate! Vaughan is calling entrepreneurs and start-ups to pitch their ideas for a sustainable future at the Activate! Vaughan innovation challenge on November 21, 2019 for a chance to earn a $5,000 provincial grant 
  • Partner with Vaughan Businesses: Activate! Vaughan is calling on business leaders looking to develop and implement innovative sustainability solutions to join the program and provide insight into their industry. For more information please contact [email protected]

Vaughan Chamber of Commerce leading business mission to Israel in November
The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce is offering a business trade mission to Israel from November 25 to 30. Join other local business professionals travelling to Tel Aviv, Tiberias, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem, and make business connections along the way. 
Vaughan leads York Region in condo and single-family home sales
According to the latest figures from the Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Association, Vaughan sold a total of 2,456 condominium units and 414 single-family homes, the highest numbers of sales in York Region. Vaughan constituted 71% of all condominium sales in York Region this year. These numbers represent a significant increase from 2018, which saw sales of only 291 condominium units and 91 single-family homes.

On the substantial activity in Vaughan, Justin Sherwood, BILD's Senior Vice President, Stakeholder Relations & Communications commented,  "Vaughan has an active market right now due to a large concentration of new projects being undertaken in the Vaughan Metropolitan Center (VMC) and the attractiveness of new projects in such proximity to the subway". 
ventureLAB launches the Hardware Catalyst Initiative
The Hardware Catalyst Initiative (HCI) is Canada's first hardware and silicon lab and incubator. Located at ventureLAB in York Region, Canada's second largest tech cluster, the HCI will help hardware and silicon-focused tech companies build and grow their companies at an accelerated pace. The HCI is a 12 to 24 month program for tech companies building solutions for technologies like AI, IoT, wearable computing, 5G, and other transformative technologies that will enable the creation of globally disruptive products and solutions. Companies accepted into the program will gain access to a 1,500 square foot hardware lab with specialized equipment, access to highly experienced hardware and silicon development experts, and specialized support around IP protection, market development, and purchase and supply contracts.

AIME (Achieving Innovation and Manufacturing Excellence) Global program applications are open
The AIME (Achieving Innovation and Manufacturing Excellence) Global program has been topped-up by the Government of Canada's, Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, through the Investing in Business Growth and Productivity Initiative. The Yves Landry Foundation established the AIME Global initiative, offering manufacturers in south, central and eastern Ontario up to $100,000 to offset the costs of training expenses and skill-supgrading related to supporting innovation and achieving a competitive advantage. 

Participants must meet the following criteria: 
  •  Have between 10 and 1,000 employees in southern Ontario; 
  •  Have been continuously in business for at least three years (3 years); 
  •  Must be able to demonstrate a solid financial footing over the three year period;
  • Manufacturing facility or facilities in Southern Ontario; 
  •  Manufacture a specific product for sale in Ontario or elsewhere.

EMC's 'Advantage Through Excellence: Future of Manufacturing Conference' in Vaughan this October
Canada's Largest Manufacturing Consortium, Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC), together with event partners and stakeholders, is hosting their national manufacturing conference October 8 to October 10, 2019. 'Advantage Through Excellence: Future of Manufacturing Conference' is a two-and-a-half day event exploring the competitive advantages, opportunities and successes that can be achieved by manufacturers through industry-driven interaction and sharing of best practices. Up to 900 manufacturing decision-makers from across Canada are anticipated to attend. 

At past EMC events, conference delegates typically consisting of senior manufacturing leaders (CEO through to Plant/Operations management) comprised over 80% of total participants. These manufacturers are complimented by industry, business and community stakeholders who all share a similar objective: experience first-hand, EMC's motto of "sharing to optimize learning, expertise and resources to achieve world class", which its members have so successfully fostered.

Drone Delivery Canada opens new commercial operations center in Vaughan, announces commercial partnership with Vaughan-based manufacturer
Drone Delivery Canada has opened a new 16,000 square foot state-of-the-art operations facility in Vaughan, which will be able to manage 1,500 drones at full capacity. In the last year, Drone Delivery Canada also announced a $2.5 million deal with Moose Cree First Nation to deliver goods, as well as a marketing partnership with Air Canada.

The Vaughan-headquartered drone technology company has recently announced their first commercial partnership with Vaughan-based Vision Profile Extrusions Ltd., a building products manufacturer, to deliver products between their locations. 
Vaughan-based auto sector manufacturer receives federal funding to scale operations and create high-quality jobs
Global Plas Inc., a Vaughan-based manufacturer of molded plastic parts for Tier 1 automotive manufacturers, received $3 million in FedDev Ontario funding. This funding is being used to renovate their new 71,000-square-foot facility, add new production lines and invest in new machinery and equipment. The investment will create 50 high-quality jobs, and will allow Global Plas Inc. to expand operations, further strengthening the automotive parts supply chain across Southern Ontario.

The facingNORTH: art | symbol | story exhibition opened in June in recognition of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day. It will be featured in the on the SLATE Atrium Gallery at Vaughan City Hall until Tuesday, Dec. 24, and includes stone and bone sculpture displays and wall hangings that interpret traditional Inuit legends, myths and ways of life. The City of Vaughan proudly recognizes the outstanding creative accomplishments of these three exceptional Inuit artists - and all Indigenous artists - as respected artists, whose work contributes significantly to the wealth of the contemporary Canadian art scene.

The City's first podcast series is here! Vaughan is the commercial real estate market to watch.
