Congress is Back: Urge Strong HUD Funding

Tell Congress Funding for Senior Housing is Critical

The Issue:

In the coming weeks, Congress will focus on finishing the fiscal year 2020 HUD appropriations bill. The Senate is expected to take up its HUD funding bill for the first time the week of September 16. The House will have to rewrite its spending bills because they exceed newly agreed-upon spending caps. Congress must hear our priorities!

Your representative and senators need to hear from you:
  • We need significant expansion of funding for new homes under HUD's Section 202 program.
  • We need to expand the number of Section 202 communities with Service Coordinators.
  • We need adequate and timely funding to renew all subsidies from Project Rental Assistance Contracts and Project-Based Rental Assistance.
  • Any Continuing Resolution must include protections to ensure Section 202 communities' funding is uninterrupted.

Send a message to your elected officials in Congress and urge them to expand and preserve affordable housing for older adults. Your voice will make a difference as we work with Congress to finish the job on funding for these vital programs.
How you can help:

DHS receives $1M grant to improve reporting of elder abuse

By Katherine Landergan , POLITICO New Jersey

09/10/2019

The state Department of Human Services announced today that it has received a federal grant of more than $1 million to improve reporting and tracking of elder abuse.

The grant is spread out over three years, at $350,000 per year, according to the department. The money will go toward the creation of a statewide database for DHS' Adult Protective Services provider network, which includes health care professionals, law enforcement officers and other officials who are required by law to report suspected cases of vulnerable adult abuse.

"As our population ages, we have an obligation to help ensure that older New Jerseyans are safe and well cared for in our communities," Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson said in a statement. "Building a standardized way to identify, track and assess outcomes for elder abuse, neglect and exploitation is key to achieving that goal. We are pleased New Jersey has secured these federal resources to advance our efforts to protect our older residents."
