Day 49: Finding Inspiration in Calabasas, California
Destination:
Calabasas, California
Calabasas is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It's located 22 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, in the hills west of the San Fernando Valley and in the northwest Santa Monica Mountains between Woodland Hills and Malibu.
Weather in Calabasas is mild all year. The highest temperature is in August at around 77°F. The lowest temperature is in December at about 55°F. February is the rainiest month with 3.2" of moisture.
Fun Facts:
It is generally accepted that the name of Calabasas is derived from the Spanish calabaza meaning "pumpkin", "squash", or "gourd" because of the presence of wild squash plants that grow in the area.
In honor of its namesake, the City of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hold an annual Pumpkin Festival in October, including carnival games, exhibits, demonstrations, and live entertainment. The festival has evolved from a small-town fair to a significant annual event.
Art Form: Quotable Cuff Bracelets
Quotable Cuffs offer everyday inspiration, motivation, happiness and comfort. Quotable Cuffs are open bracelets bearing words of inspiration.
Whitney Howard Designs has taken an otherwise understated piece of jewelry and created a beautiful daily reminder of the life you want to live. Choose the story and message you want to live each day by wearing the reminder on your wrist. It's like tying a string around your finger, but so much cooler.
Through their inspirational cuffs and other products, Whitney Howard Designs tries to encourage others to "activate positive thinking when life gets messy."
Life in the real world is a mixture of joy and pain, hugs and heartbreak.
Many scientific studies show that a regular practice of positive thinking has huge benefits on the body. Positive thinking can calm your nerves, lower anxiety and even boost healing.
They suggest
three simple steps to shift your mind into positive gear:
Step #1: Flip the script.
Instead of obsessing about what can go wrong,
flip the script and visualize what could go right
. Why flipping the script works: By visualizing a positive outcome, you direct your mind and body towards a healthier, happier you.
Step 2: Add an affirmation.
Think of a mantra or affirmation you can say to reinforce your new script. Say your affirmation several times a day, or whenever the old "scripts" creep back into your mind.
Step 3: Wear it daily.
The most surefire way to remember your affirmation on your busiest days is to wear it. It can be a necklace, bracelet, ring, t-shirt, hat, tattoo - as long as it's something that touches your skin and stays with you everywhere you go. When you wear a mantra, you fire off three physical senses at once: sight, sound and touch. That's a powerful combination.
About the Artists:
Whitney Herman Schwartz -
"I love words, quotes, art, people, connecting, traveling, reading, creating, and mostly I love to give."
For over 15 years Whitney had a shop called Handle with Care. There she noticed people were always in search of anything that inspired positive feelings. Her retail shop was the perfect place for her to create products and see how people responded.
Whitney's first product was the Millennium Angel. She saw that something small could be very impactful to someone.
She went from running the retail shop to creating jewelry that she wholesales around the world. "I do what I love. It thrills me to know I can be an artist and create heartfelt objects people want to wear or give. When I am not designing for Whitney Howard I am also an Eco-Pop artist (I turn cereal boxes into art!), I'm a wanna-be chef, a leader of a local Green Team, and Mom."
Howard Schwartz-
Before launching Whitney Howard Designs, Howard was an actor in such independent films as "Rancho Cucamonga", "Slaves of Hollywood" and the TV series "Wind on Water". After leaving acting, he helped launch Whitney Howard Designs seeing the impact potential for their designs.
"I'm inspired by the outdoors, people and art. I love acting, mentoring, hiking, trying new things, extreme adventures, and most especially, my family." He enjoys giving back to organizations like Summit for Someone, volunteering at his children's school or mentoring kids in their Venturing Programs. His bucket list includes Mt. Everest, John Muir Trail, and Camino De Santiago to name a few.
The Company: Whitney Howard Designs
"A meaningful company, accessorizing life's journey."
For over 25 years Whitney Howard Designs has been creating heartfelt and inspired jewelry that touches lives with their collection of constant reminders that celebrate life's moments. Their jewelry is designed to Inspire, Comfort, Heal, Support and Uplift.
The Whitney Howard team
designs with intention, so the pieces not only have a positive impact on the recipient, but on the environment as well. That's why they only use recycled, repurposed and organic materials. They use recycled lead-free pewter to handcraft their bracelets in Los Angeles.
Whitney Howard Designs is now a worldwide brand. Their intention is to continue "Paying it Forward" by creating products that make a difference in the world. They focus on a social conscience approach to doing business and customer service.
Philanthropy is also a key part of Whitney Howard Designs.
In addition to Whitney serving on the Calabasas Environmental Commission, Whitney Howard Designs has partnered with the Walking Strong Foundation
to bring attention to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a crippling disease that only affects boys and takes away their ability to walk and shortens their lives.
In early May they partnered with Connecting a Caring Community that helped facilitate the distribution of 5,000
Gratitude Blessing Rings to hospital nurses and other front line healthcare workers in the LA area.
