County Seeks Feedback on Proposed Recycling and Food Waste Collection Requirements
Dakota County is requesting feedback from commercial organizations (e.g., businesses, for and non-profit organizations, etc.) on waste and recycling policies under consideration.

The County’s 2018-2038 Master Plan identifies strategies the County will pursue to reduce waste going to landfills and make progress toward the state's goal to recycle 75 percent of waste by 2030. The plan includes strategies to amend Ordinance 110 (Solid Waste Management) for increased accountability in the trash and recycling management system. More than 1,300 stakeholders participated in initial stakeholder engagement efforts earlier this year to gather input on possible Ordinance 110 policy approaches: to avoid unintended consequences, to identify implementation approaches, and to identify resource needs.

Using stakeholder input results, County staff revised Ordinance 110. Proposed ordinance changes may affect businesses. Changes include phased-in requirements for recycling and for large commercial generators to collect organics (food waste).

Check out the County’s  project website  for more information about the proposed changes and project schedule, including:

It is County staff’s goal to gather feedback on proposed requirements while they are still in draft form so that reasonable Ordinance 110 conditions and associated timing are developed. Feedback is requested by October 4, 2019.

Methods for feedback:
  1. Meet with County staff: Staff is available to meet with businesses/organizations individually and with commercial trade associations/representative groups to discuss proposed requirements. Contact Dave.Magnuson@co.dakota.mn.us to schedule a meeting, or
  2. Email County staff: Email your feedback on proposed requirements to Dave.Magnuson@co.dakota.mn.us.
