September 2019

Dear Reader:
Ah, September, the ninth month of the year and in the northern hemisphere usually considered the first month of Autumn.

September began with Hurricane Dorian, we are grateful the Lowcountry Region was spared a direct hit and any significant damage from the storm. Office closing and reopening information was posted on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. If you haven't already, please like, follow and connect with us to stay abreast of future event happenings.

Highlights from this month's newsletter include: educational classes provided by the Aging Department, Job fair and Workshop announcements from the Workforce Development Department and an announcement of EDA supplemental disaster funding from our Community & Economic Development Department.

2019 Supplemental Disaster Funding

In August, the Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced that it published its Fiscal Year 2019 Disaster Supplemental Notice of Funding Opportunity making $587 million available to eligible grantees in communities impacted by Presidentially declared natural disasters in 2018, and floods and tornadoes in 2019.

This funding is in addition to the $587 million that Congress appropriated to EDA last year to support local plans and activities to recover, and grow back stronger, following major disasters that occurred in calendar year 2017.

What does this mean for the Lowcountry region?

$147 million was awarded to the Atlanta region, an area comprised of 8 states, of which South Carolina is one. Both Jasper and Colleton counties are eligible for the FY 2019 assistance in the Lowcountry Region.

Hardeeville Commerce Park was funded as part of the FY 2018 supplemental funding. HCP is a $3.1 million project to provide water, wastewater and road way access into the park itself. EDA provided $1.86 million of the $3.1 million needed for the project. The remaining monies were provided by SC Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA). These improvements would result in the creation of 5 jobs and this project could serve as a catalyst to attract other investors to the park.
