The Local Sport Relief Fund has been developed to provide one-time financial relief for non-profit, community level sport organizations, clubs and associations at risk of collapse or insolvency due to the impacts of COVID-19. The fund is supported by the Province of B.C. and administered through viaSport British Columbia.

The goal of the funding is to support local sport organizations that have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. The Province of B.C. recognizes the importance of community-based sport organizations and has allocated this funding to help in their recovery.

Eligible organizations are invited to apply for up to $7,500 to help offset fixed and operating costs. Funding must support administration and operational needs for an eventual return to sport, and new sport programming or initiatives are ineligible.

We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. KidSportâ„¢ provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.

KidSport Kamloops is a local chapter of KidSport Canada.  Funds raised locally are spent locally and are distributed as grants to cover registration and/or equipment fees associated with participation in a season of sport.

Even if it feels like the world has come to a standstill, that doesn't mean you should.

We've always believed in the power of movement and a healthy lifestyle. Now that many of us find ourselves isolated at home, cut off from each other and more sedentary than usual, movement has become more important than ever.

Getting to know our Local Sport Organizations

The Kamloops Track and Field Club (KTFC) is a non-profit athletics club working with athletes from the ages of 3 to 100. Our coaches work with our athletes to move them ahead in their events of interest.

Can you tell us a little about your club and what your club does?

The KTFC offers recreational and competitive programming for all ages. Age groups and programming offerings are as follows:
  • Cross-country - Ages 9-12 and 13+
  • Mini Track Rascals - Ages 3-5
  • Track Rascals - Ages 6-8
  • Junior Development Track and Field - Ages 9-12
  • Track and Field - 13+, U20, Senior (20-34), Masters (35+)
Programs run in three distinct seasons: cross-country (September and October), indoor season (November to March) and outdoor season (April to mid-July). Some athletes may train in July because provincial/national championships take place during the summer.

In addition to regular programming, we also host a number of track and field meets in Kamloops throughout the year, both indoors and outdoors. We offer specialized clinics and summer camps for youth. We also support SD73 by offering clinics to school-aged children.

How long has your club been active and operating?

The KTFC has been operating since 1972

Where does your club meet and train?

We are extremely lucky to train at one of the best facilities in Canada. The majority of our training is at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) in Kamloops. We run programming at the Hillside Stadium during outdoor season, and inside the TCC using the indoor track, weight room, and throwing cage during the indoor season. We access trails all around the city during cross-country season and utilize the lower field at the TCC for throwing events as well.

What are all the disciplines involved in track and field?

Track and field consists of the following events:

Cross-country running
Sprints
Hurdles
Jumps (long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault)
Throws (hammer throw, shot put, javelin, discus)
Middle distance running
Long distance running
Multi-event (heptathlon, decathlon)

Athletes have the ability to train for a variety of events from a young age. The KTFC follows Athletics Canada's Long-term Athlete Development Model: Late Specialization Sports. Athletes typically specialize in events later on in their high school years.

Describe your club members in one word.

Passionate

What are your proudest club accomplishments or achievements that you'd like to highlight?

We have a history of producing some notable world-class athletes earing Word Championship and Olympic medals. Dylan Armstrong joined the KTFC at the age of 9 and became a
decorated Olympian, earning a bronze medal in 2008 in shot put. Gary Reed also trained with the Club during his formative years and went on the win a silver medal in 2007 at the World Championships, as well as place 4th at the 2008 Olympics. Dylan chose to give back to the community and is currently the Head Coach and the Throws Coach with the Club. Gary also volunteers his time with the Club to coach our Track Rascals (ages 6-8) currently.
More recently, in 2019, Greg Stewart won a silver medal in shot put at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai. Stewart is coached by Dylan Armstrong. Your council also recently recognized Coach Armstrong as the Coach of the Year in Kamloops for 2019, as well as Kian Kibihi (hammer thrower) and Greg Stewart (shot put) as male athletes of the year.
Bazil Spencer of the KTFC also won the Canadian U20 National Championship in high jump in 2019 under the guidance of Coach Armstrong.

What are some of your club's future goals

One of our goals is always to increase membership to provide a competitive training environment for our athletes. Aside from this, we are pushing to have all of our coaches NCCP certified as a Performance Coaches in their respective event disciplines. Recreational sport is important, but we want further focus placed on high performance and setting the bar high in terms of our athletes making national or international teams.
Another goal for this year is to be able to continue to provide successful track meets for high school and elementary aged youth in the COVID environment. Keeping youth involved in sport during a stressful time is more important than ever. It can be done safely in track and field.

Tell us something that not everyone would know about your club?

There are qualifying standards in every track and field event. If these standards are met by an athlete, they can qualify for national and international teams. You can travel the world, compete for your country, and even do track and field professionally! Athletes have endless opportunities in the sport with hard work and dedication.

How do people connect with the club to learn more and get involved?

We have recently launched a new website which can be accessed at www.kamtrack.ca.
You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram at @kamtfc. We regularly update these platforms with images and program and event information. You can also subscribe to our newsletter via our website to receive regular updates and important information.
