A Look Back at Homecoming 2018
|
|
Our Student Council works diligently to plan an exciting and action-packed week for students. This year's Homecoming theme is
Out of this World.
When walking through the halls, you can feel the energy and see the school spirit as students dress for theme days, prepare for the parade, decorate classroom doors, and our famous Woodchucks build the bonfire. We welcome our alumni back for the weekend's festivities and expect our students to show their overwhelming support at all the events. Throughout Homecoming Week, Student Council will host activities before, after, and even during the school day.
This year, instead of clubs/teams decorating sections of hallways, each club/team is now assigned an individual classroom door. Their efforts help to get the entire building excited to celebrate Homecoming.
Students also have spirit days that Student Council plans and organizes. This is a great and easy way for all students to get involved with the Homecoming Festivities. Below are the themes:
Monday, September 23
Spirit Day: Pajama Theme
Lunch Activity: Star Wars Movie with popcorn (Cafeteria)
After school activity: West Nation Punt, Pass & Kick (Memorial Field 7:00-9:00 p.m.)
Tuesday, September 24
Spirit Day: Jersey Theme
Lunch Activity: Out of this World Karaoke (Biester)
Wednesday, September 25
Spirit Day: USA Theme
Lunch Activity: Yoga (Fourth-floor bridge)
After School Activity: Door Decorating
Thursday, September 26
Spirit Day: Groutfit Theme
Lunch Activity: Sweet Treats (Cafeteria)
Friday, September 27

FOR AP PARENTS

SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
|
|
|
|
The School Counseling Department is excited to officially kick off the college application season with several events for our upperclassmen. First of all, as of the date of this newsletter, we have over 120 college representatives coming to Glenbard West to meet with our students. Last year we had over 200 by the end of the year, so be on the lookout for our College Rep Visit Newsletter in your email inbox! Please encourage your child to sign up for some college meetings through Naviance. These are excellent opportunities for students to not only gather more information on numerous colleges while at West, but also to get a face to face meeting with the admissions representatives for specific colleges in which they may be applying. Also, a reminder that the FAFSA application opening date is less than a month away, available October 1st!
Financial aid for college is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the earlier you file, the better. There will be several workshops in the District to assist with this process if needed, including a breakout session at College Night on November 6th for Juniors. In addition, there will be FAFSA workshops for Senior parents on October 16th at West from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Senior students can receive help with the FAFSA on 9/16, 10/7, 11/4 & 12/9 at Glenbard West during lunch periods.
School Counselors met with all their seniors on August 27th to review a detailed college application checklist and discuss the steps for requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation through Naviance. This year we also have a new brag sheet students can share with their teachers to help guide their rec letters. In addition, we reviewed the timeframe for admissions testing, essay writing, scholarship applications, and financial aid. Afterward, School Counselors began meeting with Seniors in small groups and/or individually to walk them through the Naviance and Common App college application process. We encourage all parents of seniors to have a discussion with your child regarding the meetings with their counselor and work with your student on their Naviance account to complete the Parent Input Form in order to enrich the letters of recommendation counselors are writing.
For Juniors, counselors are continuing the developmental process of college preparation by visiting English classrooms between September 24-27 to work with students on college research and developing their activity resumes in Naviance.
In addition, we will host the annual
College Night on Wednesday, November 6th
, so make sure you save the date! We invite all juniors and their parents to join us as we convene in the auditorium for a welcome prior to dividing into several breakout sessions throughout the building. We will hold sessions to learn more about the college admissions process, financial aid, and a Naviance tutorial for parents.
Stay tuned for a more detailed agenda!

Collaboration a key competency in our
Profile of a Graduate
Recently, we launched our Profile of a Graduate – a multi-faceted transformative movement that underscores six key competencies that we want every graduate to embody. Each competency is accompanied by descriptions of that particular attribute.
The descriptions were developed by department chairs from each of our schools, along with school and district administrators. We worked through several iterations and used resources from EdLeader21, a national network of educators implementing competencies into their systems.
Our Profile of a Graduate includes the following competencies:
A Glenbard Graduate:
- Collaborates
- Communicates
- Thinks Critically
- Embraces Diversity
- Creates
- Is Self-Empowered
In each month’s newsletter, we will look at the descriptions that correspond to each competency. Today, let’s look at the descriptions that accompany collaborates:
- Inspires and motivates others toward a common purpose
- Takes responsibility for self and team through shared, focused leadership
- Receives, provides and learns from constructive feedback
- Values and understands mutual accountability to the mission
- Optimizes digital tools to learn and grow with others
- Is generous in sharing ideas with others
Think about the people you work with – aren’t the above descriptions what you seek in coworkers, leaders and job applicants? Aren’t they also the qualities you appreciate about those you volunteer with in parent organizations, service clubs and charitable organizations? These are the qualities our talented faculty and staff will help our students develop in high school and carry with them throughout life.
Next steps include defining a greater purpose in curriculum and assessment outcomes and refining competency descriptors by subject area.
The job market is constantly changing. It’s critical that we equip our students with an array of skills, including collaboration, so they are prepared for whatever path they follow in the future.
Our Profile of a Graduate gives us a vision for what each student needs to be successful in life and guides our work to advance how we prepare students for college, careers and life. Learn more about our Profile of a Graduate
