Judge Sides With Disney Over Disability Access At Theme Parks
[Source: Disability Scoop]

ORLANDO, Fla. - A federal judge has ruled in favor of Disney World after an Orlando disability advocate sued the company on behalf of her adult son with autism to get him immediate access to the FastPass lines at the theme parks.

It's the first legal victory for Disney on the issue. Tampa attorney Andy Dogali said earlier this year he has filed about 60 other similar civil lawsuits in Florida and California that are awaiting trial.

A commentary published in the journal Pediatrics, the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, concludes that children infrequently transmit COVID-19 to each other or to adults and that many schools, provided they follow appropriate social distancing guidelines and take into account rates of transmission in their community, can and should reopen in the fall.

Regular Physical Activity Seems to Enhance Cognition in Children Who Need it Most
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

A common school-age stereotype is that smart kids are unathletic. However, as a recent study lead by Associate Professor Keita Kamijo at the University of Tsukuba and Assistant Professor Toru Ishihara at Kobe University shows, physical activity is linked to better cognitive ability, which is in turn related to academic performance in school. Understanding the effects of physical activity on cognition has

Study Finds Hidden Emotions in the Sound of Words
[Source: Science Daily]

New research shows that some sound combinations, like those in the word 'virus,' elicit more emotionally intense responses than others. This may play a role in both children's language acquisition and how we might have evolved language in the first place.

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, it's common to feel stress levels rise every time we hear the word "virus." But new Cornell-led research reveals that the sound of the word itself was likely to raise your blood pressure - even before "corona" was added to it.

Autism Researchers Map Brain Circuitry of Social Preference
[Source: Science Daily]

A new study reveals how two key neural circuits dictate the choice between social approach and avoidance. The findings will enable researchers to evaluate social interventions in autism.
Some individuals love meeting new people, while others abhor the idea.

For individuals with conditions such as autism, unfamiliar social interactions can produce negative emotions such as fear and anxiety. A new study from Scripps Research reveals how two key neural circuits dictate the choice between social approach and avoidance.

A Shorter IQ Test for Children with Special Needs
[Source: Science Daily]

For decades, neuropsychologists have used the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children test as the gold-standard intelligence quotient (IQ) test to determine the intellectual abilities of children with special needs. However, this comprehensive test can take up to 2 hours to complete, and many children with special needs have a difficult time participating in such long tests.

8 Summer Activities to Promote Kids' Healthy Development During COVID-19
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

With daycare and school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents have taken on more responsibility for children's learning and development and for many this has been a major source of stress. The pandemic and the challenges of learning from home have definitely taken a toll on parents and children!

Parents and children are also grappling with cancelled sports, camps, and activities this summer, or reduced-capacity daycare centres. Parents typically rely on these activity and care options to keep kids busy, and parents' time scheduled. This means unscheduled months ahead. Some parents undoubtedly will continue to struggle with finding ways to occupy their children.

Distance Learning Lesson Plan: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
[Source: No Time for Flash Cards]

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom: Anniversary Edition by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault is one of my absolute favorite books ever. Many alphabet books are great tools, but this one not only entertains readers, it never gets old. Its text is musical. Its premise is brilliant in its simplicity, and kids love it. I love that it shows the alphabet in both its upper and lowercase forms. My favorite line is "Skit skat scoodle doot. Flip flop flee." I hope I am conveying how much fun this book is to read out loud. I have never had a class who didn't like it and if you don't have one, you should!

Behind My Mask: A Super Kids Self-Portrait

I have created a lesson for my students and any kiddos who wish to create titled Behind My Mask! When my students return in the fall (and, yes, I said 'when' as I am very hopeful and optimistic), they will be asked to mask-up. We always seem to start out school year with a selfie so I was bummed when I thought of the idea of my students drawing themselves with their best facial feature hidden. And that's where the idea of this surprise drawing came from.

Children (and adults) can start integrating different breathing techniques into their day - at circle time, meal time, and transition time. Bunny breathing or bunny breaths is one type of breathing technique to teach children.

Take the time to support children by regularly practicing and pausing periodically, taking the time to breathe consciously. Encourage them to notice and name how the different breathing exercises affect how they feel and think and behave.
