Dear Clients and Friends,
We had a busy month, and the next month is even busier. It was my pleasure to present this month at the Arc of Quad Cities, where families turned out to learn about how to plan for the future, as well as to hear more about government benefits.
It was such fun to meet the families, and to start thinking bigger about how to help families in that community. Watch for future news on that!
There are several feel good stories this issue, as we head into the last quarter of the year. Our last Parent University workshop is September 25th, and we look forward to starting to create the curriculum for 2020. I would love to hear some feedback directly from you on how you felt the classes went this year, as well as what you might like to learn in 2020.
Have a great start to Fall. I love watching the leaves turn color, but I'm certainly sad to say goodbye to summer.

Spokane Valley Acquires Weighted Blankets to Help First Responders Calm People with Autism

With claims that they help with sleep, anxiety and stress, the popularity of weighted blankets increased markedly in 2018.
Now, local first responders are utilizing those same calming effects to help people on-scene who have autism or are in crisis.
This week, the Spokane Valley Fire Department announced it purchased 10 pairs of 7-pound weighted blankets - one for each of its stations - from
the ISAAC Foundation, a Spokane nonprofit that helps families with children who have autism. The Spokane Fire Department has used them for three years and now has a pair on each firefighting apparatus and ambulance.

The first day of school can be nerve-wracking. Especially when not everyone has such supportive classmates.
Two elementary school boys in Wichita, Kansas, set an example from which we can all learn: a lesson in kindness.
Courtney Moore dropped off her 8-year-old son, Christian, for the first day of school and watched as he sat down on the ground with another boy who was crying in a corner, she told
CNN affiliate KAKE.

Hiring Those with Disabilities Isn't Charity, It's Good Business
Any time Bet-R Neighborhood Market owner Cliff Boulden has a job opening, he tries to hire a person with an intellectual or developmental disability-not as a sign of sympathy, but because he sees them as an untapped workforce that's eager to stock shelves and read labels.
Boulden already knows many of them through his involvement with the Greater Baton Rouge Hope Academy, the alma mater of his 25-year-old daughter, Molly, who is developmentally delayed. After Molly aged out of the school a few years ago, Boulden hired her part-time as a way to keep her busy and focused. But since then, he's also brought on at least a half-dozen of her friends with special needs, who now comprise roughly 15% of his payroll.
