Connect With CHS
Colonial High School

We are releasing student progress reports for the first quarter of 2019-2020 this week. If you have a student attending CHS, please review their results as soon as possible keeping in mind that we offer free after-school tutoring and Saturday tutoring to all of our Grenadiers.

This coming Wednesday, September 18th we have our Parent Leadership Council which begins at 5:00 p.m. Please remember that this event will be held on the Freshman Campus. Again, if you have a student attending CHS, please know that you are welcome and encouraged to participate!

As for this week's update, we have included some additional pictures from last week's Club Rush which was very successful. We have so many clubs and organizations here at Colonial - I invite all of our Grenadiers to try one extracurricular activity this year to include our impressive list of sports teams. This is a major part of the high school experience.

I hope this finds your Monday off to a fantastic start and as I write here each week . . . IT'S GREAT TO BE A GRENADIER!

Dr. Hector Maestre
Principal

Please remember Grenadiers, if you ever see or hear of something suspicious or unusual, say something right away. Thank you for your continued awareness.

Vital Signs
Tardies surged last week

Tardies continue to be an area for improvement; students will want to make sure they are on time for class so as not to miss valuable instruction. Teachers are using HERO to track tardies and deans are providing consequences such as detentions.  Additionally, teachers are continuing to use HERO to provide students with positive feedback (see just below for information on HERO).

Spotlight on Algebra 1
Linear equations with one variable in Mrs. Sepulveda's class

Mrs. Sepulveda is modeling the use of algebra tiles as students learn how to solve linear equations with variables.  Last week, students collaborated with a partner as they modeled linear equations with one variable.

* Algebra 1 is a foundational course; passing the End of Course exam is required for graduation.

Girls' Volleyball Wins "Boot Game" vs. University
Our girls' volleyball team was victorious in our big rivalry match against University High School: While University won the first round: 29-27, our Grenadiers owned the next three games: 25-17, 25-19, and 25-18.

Coach Villegas, who transferred from East River High School, was awarded the renowned Boot trophy on behalf of the team. The Boot Game is a long-standing tradition; the pinnacle rivalry match between University High School and Colonial High School in every sport. Congratulations to our girls for truly bringing home the Boot!

Grenadiers take on the Patriots on Friday, September 20 at Freedom High School.

Club Rush Highlights
Wednesday, September 11

Over 25 clubs and organizations set up tables and interest booths during both lunches on Wednesday, September 11.  Our student body was able to learn about each club and sign up based on their interests.

Colonial clubs and organizations had their presentations set up in the courtyard.

Pals with a Purpose and Key Club each offer their own version of community service opportunities.

The Step Team and the Legacy Club are all about student empowerment and positive energy!

As seen here, Colonial's Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Cambridge all had very professional presentations on their organizations.

Future Farmers of America (FFA), our award-winning agricultural science organization, shared animal care details with their fellow Grenadiers. Students and faculty enjoyed seeing Jenny the goat and holding the non-venomous snakes.
