Letter to the Community from Mayor Steve Morley
|
|
Elmhurst Community Members,
Our nation is deeply disturbed by senseless acts of hate and violence.
We are united in knowing that the murder of George Floyd was heinous and wrong.
As we mourn the loss of a human life, our society must end these acts of violence and hate.
One of our core services is to provide safety for the Elmhurst residents and the community. We work diligently to maintain order and improve your quality of life. Under no circumstances do we tolerate violence, hate, racism or discrimination of any kind.
We are supportive of individuals who peacefully assemble to express their beliefs. We will never lose sight of this. The unfortunate reality is that we are seeing peaceful assemblies turn into targeted areas for civil unrest around the nation. We ask that you understand our primary goal is keeping our community safe and maintaining order.
As your Mayor, I ask that we focus on our community values of respect and equality in a peaceful manner.

Recap of Peaceful Assembly, June 2nd

|
A peaceful assembly took place on Tuesday, June 2 at the intersection of York St. and North Ave. with approximately 200 attendees. Out of an abundance of caution, a decision was made to close our downtown City Centre and restrict access to York Street due to concerns regarding vandalism and looting in other western suburbs.
The event began at approximately 4 p.m. and crowds dispersed around 8:30 p.m. The event took place with no serious incident or injury and participants remained peaceful. The City of Elmhurst thanks the event participants for expressing their first amendment rights in a safe and peaceful manner.

Planned Peaceful Assembly, June 9th
The City is aware of a planned peaceful assembly in Wilder Park on Tuesday, June 9th. The event organizers are young adults who graduated from York High School. The event will begin and end in Wilder Park and will take place from 4-7 p.m. City Officials have been in contact with the event organizers to discuss their plans for a peaceful gathering.
During this extremely troubled time in our nation’s history, the City of Elmhurst, Elmhurst Police Department, and Elmhurst Park District are committed to working diligently with peaceful demonstrators.
We ask that anyone attending this event conduct themselves in a safe and peaceful manner. The safety of our residents, the event participants, and the community we serve is our top priority.

Metra outlines plans as Chicago area begins to reopen
As Illinois and the Chicago region move toward establishing a “new normal” in the time of COVID-19, Metra is providing more details about the steps it is taking to ensure passengers will feel safe using its system.
“We know more than ever that passengers need to feel safe and confident using our service,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “We know more than ever the importance of providing a clean, hygienic experience on the platforms and on the trains. And we know more than ever the need to promote safe and healthy practices, such as social distancing and wearing face coverings.”

Garage and Yard Sales Now Permitted with Certain Limitations
|
|
A permit is not required for a garage sale, however, please note that no more than two garage sales are allowed to be conducted on any one residence each year.
Garage sales sign regulations:
- The city will allow signs on your property.
- You are allowed (1) additional sign in the city parkway that can be installed up to 24 hours before the sale is too begin.
- All signs should include the contact name and number
- All signs need to be removed once the garage sale has been completed
- No signs are allowed on the electrical polls, street sign posts or city lamp posts.

Keep Elmhurst Open - Know the Guidelines!
Elmhurst businesses have been working diligently to learn the rules & regulations to reopen - help them keep their doors open by following the regulations for Customer Behaviors outlined in the State Guidelines: masks have to be worn unless physically eating at restaurants, appointments are required for personal services like haircuts (with masks on during service), 10ft distancing & masks for outdoor fitness classes, etc. Know your role & support local!

Explore Elmhurst Trolley - Cancelled
|
Unfortunately, the Explore Elmhurst Express Trolley service has been cancelled this summer due to safety concerns related to COVID-19. We look forward to providing this service to the Elmhurst community and hope to be running during the holiday season!

Elmhurst is updating its Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan with the goal of identifying roadway improvements to make walking and biking easier.
The City is hosting several online opportunities for residents to review and comment on the proposed recommendations:

Reminder! Public comment options for public meetings
|
City Hall continues to be open during public meetings and for public comment opportunities. There are several ways to provide public comment during these meetings including online and in person. The City recently added a call-in option for public comment. A list of public commenting options can be found on the
City's Agenda Center/Boardocs

Illinois Mask Requirements
|
The State has mandated Illinoisans to wear a face mask or covering shield when leaving your home or reporting for essential operations. This is especially important when people cannot maintain 6-feet of social distancing. Example areas include shopping at essential businesses, picking up food, visiting a health care provider, traveling on public transportation, walking through condo or apartment complex common areas, when interacting with people providing essential services, when feeling sick, coughing, or sneezing. You do not have to wear a masking when running or walking in your neighborhood or when performing outdoor activities on your own property.
