Opportunities for Involvement

Ways to get involved in our community, at Trinity, and in the world.
Showing Up for Racial Justice

“Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to re-educate themselves out of their racial ignorance.  It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

As Sacred Ground, the Episcopal Church series on race, finishes, and as Black History Month ends, we at JOC are looking at how we can continue to build our awareness and also take action to promote racial equity and be allies to communities of color.

Communities of Color have put out a "call to action" to White Americans, and one answer to that call is Showing Up for Racial Justice. SURJ is a national organization with over 150 chapters and affiliates across the country aimed at mobilizing White people to actively join the fight for racial justice.

Research indicates that we have the greatest impact within our own racial and social in-groups, which is why SURJ uses the change-agent method of "White people calling in other White people" to get more involved and invested in racial justice.

SURJ has a racially diverse advisory group and sees "accountability to People of Color as a core principle central to the work for racial justice and transformative change" and therefore works under the direction and guidance of other racial and social justice groups such as The Movement for Black Lives and many others.

JOC is also in the process of establishing a relationship with Black Lives Matter, now called Healing Justice SB, now under new leadership.
Liaisons Needed!

At our last JOC meeting in February, we discussed the need for liaisons to organizations we have recently funded and hold in high regard. Since the list is longer than the number of our Council members, we would like to invite parishioners to become liaisons to some of these groups which we feel will offer them both volunteer opportunities and a chance to get to know the Council’s work. Love Your Neighbor Weekend
March 11-14, 2021

Want to talk about what's next for immigration advocates? Please join the Interfaith Sanctuary Alliance for a virtual Love Your Neighbor Weekend, a time for people of faith and people of conscience to renew our commitment to standing in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors. Events will include a film screening and panel discussion.

Stories of Volunteerism
Every month we publish a story about volunteerism from a Trinity parishioner. Here’s an excerpt from this month's story by Jennifer Bergquist (you can read her full story by clicking this link).

"What comes to mind when YOU think of justice and outreach within our parish? I think of many ministries focused on homelessness, hunger, early care and education, immigrant rights, the Alternative Christmas Market and the list goes on. There are many individuals at Trinity who have been dedicated to this work over the years but there is one person who stands out in my mind, Jean Davis."
Celebrate and Support Justice

The Justice and Outreach Council (JOC) has continued its important work while Trinity has been in diaspora. Funding for the JOC comes from your pledges and Celebration offerings. The JOC’s funding is part of our annual Operating Budget where five percent (5%) of all pledges received during the year is put in the JOC account. As pledge income has remained steady this year, these funds continue to be set aside for justice work.

However, with in-person church services suspended, we no longer have “Celebration Sundays”, and we are informed that when we resume gathering at Trinity we will not be allowed to have envelopes (as well as other materials) in the pews.

But be not dismayed! There are two ways you can continue to celebrate and support our justice work in addition to your pledges both now and in the future. You can send in a check made out to Trinity and simply note “Justice” in the memo line and provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate. You can also donate via Trinity’s PayPal account by visiting our website or by clicking here, and under “special instructions” designate your donation for JOC and provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate.

Thank you for supporting our justice work through your pledges, donations, prayers, and most of all, the work you do in your lives to make this a more loving, peaceful, and just world.
