Vice Chancellor
for Research
With all of the rankings that have been recently announced, UC Davis certainly has a lot to be proud of. I would like to add one more distinction to this list by announcing that we nearly matched our all-time record for annual research funding, garnering $845.5 million in fiscal year 2018-19, just $1.2 million shy of the record.

A significant contributor to our growth in research funding over the last few years has come from collaborative interdisciplinary research. We see this trend continuing and the impact mounting. Just this week we announced the launch of four new research centers that will receive a combined $4 million from our latest initiative, known as Inter- & Multidisciplinary Program to Accelerate Convergence & Translation or IMPACT Program. This program promotes new, sustainable, inter- and multidisciplinary research activity that responds to society’s greatest challenges and needs. We will have a launch event on October 23 rd to share the vision for each center and discuss ways to collaborate.

As you look to advance your research programs, I would like to draw your focus to the recently released federal FY 2021 Administration Research and Development Budget Priorities and look for opportunities to align your strategy with the areas targeted within. These include national security, industries of the future, advanced communication networks and autonomy, and energy and environmental leadership.

As always, I encourage you to engage with our office to explore ways in which we can help you achieve your research goals. You will also find several specific opportunities highlighted below.
Funding Opportunities for Collaborative Research

NSF Partnerships for Innovation Program
The Partnerships for Innovation Program within the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships offers researchers from all disciplines of science and engineering funded by NSF the opportunity to perform translational research and technology development, catalyze partnerships and accelerate the transition of discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace for societal benefit.
NSF Convergence Accelerator
The NSF Convergence Accelerator aims to accelerate use-inspired convergence research in areas of national importance, and initiate convergence team-building capacity around exploratory, potentially high-risk proposals in specific convergence topics (tracks).
NIH Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams
This funding opportunity is designed to support highly integrated research teams of three to six PD/PIs to address ambitious and challenging research questions that are important for the mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and are beyond the scope of one or two investigators.
