" Notes from the Console ," Article 8, By Mike Frock
"What are all those little numbers?" Part 2 - Other Annotations
In the last article we learned what the numbers represent as well as the letter abbreviations of D, CM, SM, LM, CMD, SMD, and LMD. However, if you have perused the Metrical Index, you will see a couple of other annotations, namely "extended," "with refrains(s)," and "with allelulia(s)." Some of these are a little bit more self-explanatory, but for the sake of thoroughness, let's look at these as well. If we look at #366 "God of grace and God of glory," we see "87.87.87 extended." "Extended" means that there is a phrase, almost always, but not requisitely, at the end of the verse, that is repeated. So in this hymn the phrase "for the facing of this hour" is repeated at the end of the first verse. The first repetition of the repeated phrase is included in the poetic meter, but the second repetition of the repeated phrase is not included in the poetic meter (it is in addition to the stated poetic meter). Sometimes "with repeat" is used in place of "extended," as in The Celebration Hymnal, The United Methodist Hymnal, and the Lutheran Book of Worship hymnal.

"With refrain(s)" means that in addition to the normal poetic meter, there is a refrain added, usually at the end as in #197 "Angels We have heard on high." So #197 is listed as "77.77 with refrain," the refrain being the "Gloria in excelsis Deo" section at the end sung after every verse. However, sometimes refrains are also found at the beginning as in #321 "Lift high the cross." In at least one instance, #277 "I know that my Redeemer lives," there is an interjection of "glory, hallelujah" after each phrase. So this piece, as far as the poetic meter/Metrical Index is concerned, is considered to have four refrains within the piece, but again, those refrains are not included in the normal poetic meter.

Similarly, "with alleluia(s)" means that in addition to the normal poetic meter, there are "Alleluias" added. Again these usually appear at the end of the hymn, as in #475 "Become to us the living bread," but also appear at the beginning as in #263 "The strife is o'er," and within the hymn such as #280 "Christ the Lord is risen today." And of course a hymn may have any combination of the numbers, letter abbreviations, and annotations which we have discussed so far. Hymn #14 "Come, we that love the Lord," is listed as "SM extended with refrain." The "SM" refers to the Short Meter 66.86 poetic meter, "extended" refers to the fact that both the phrases "join in a song with sweet accord" and "and thus surround the throne" are repeated in the first verse, and "refrain" refers to the "We're marching to Zion" section. Between this and the last article, we have now covered everything in the Metrical Index except the last portion listed as "Irregular." This section can get a little dicey, so it will be a separate article, and I will try my best to guide you through this part.
