A Message from Superintendent Osei: The Importance of Kindness
This Saturday, November 13 is the international observance of World Kindness Day. World Kindness Day was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. I am sharing this with you because now more than ever practicing kindness is important for everyone's mental, social, and emotional health. When we practice kindness towards ourselves and others we position ourselves to experience positive mental and physical changes. This occurs through lowering stress levels and increasing the body's production of hormones such as dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin, which are important in promoting feelings like happiness, joy, and love.

I don’t know about you, but I am always looking for ways to lower stress and find joy in all that I do. As we continue to navigate through this pandemic and enter into the winter months this will be more important than ever. The impact that demonstrating generosity, kindness, or concern for others has on a person and also the positive effect it has on my overall well-being never ceases to amaze me.

I continue to be thankful for our school community and for the care that we demonstrate to one another. We have a very special school community in St. Louis Park. In my experience, I have never encountered a community that is as caring and supportive as SLP. What makes our community so special are each of you and our brilliant students.

Please take some time to invest in our community this weekend. You can do this by doing something for yourself, sending an uplifting message or sharing a compliment with someone, or doing whatever is on your heart to spread kindness throughout St. Louis Park Public Schools.

Thank you for your commitment to St. Louis Park Public Schools and for the care that you have shown to our school community. Collectively we will accomplish great things for every student in our district.

With much appreciation,

Astein

District Seeking Feedback on Racial Equity Policy
St. Louis Park Public Schools is seeking feedback from staff, students, parents/families and the community on a NEW Racial Equity Policy that was created in alignment with the 2020-25 Strategic Plan for Racial Equity Transformation. The purpose of this policy is to “establish expectations and accountability measures for the District’s work promoting racial equity and developing culturally relevant learning environments in order to create an equitable and anti-racist school system that honors all children, families, and staff.”

In the past year, the School Board Policy Committee worked collaboratively with the Superintendent, entire School Board and district leaders to write the new policy language with input and feedback on draft language from all stakeholder groups.

Public schools have historically-embedded systems and structures that disproportionately target and impact our black, brown and indigenous students in the area of discipline while not providing equitable educational environments. With our new strategic plan and the school board’s resolution on equity and anti-racism, and discipline data, writing this policy was a priority to guide the school district’s work systemwide.

To seek feedback on the FINAL DRAFT of this policy, the school district is conducting focused conversations with stakeholder groups and inviting feedback through Thoughtexchange. Thoughtexchange allows stakeholders to share thoughts, feedback, and ideas in an open-ended, confidential, and easy-to-use digital environment. After school board approval there will be education for teachers and staff and students and families for full implementation of this policy.

The school district appreciates your time and attention to this important work and is eager to hear your thoughts. The Thoughtexchange will close at Noon on Friday, November 12.

Parents/guardians, teachers, and staff should click here to participate in the Thoughtexchange.

Students should click here to participate in the Thoughtexchange.
