You've seen them everywhere - at peace rallies and Pride marches, on the Arizona border and at the Mall of America, in our pulpit and on members of the choir, on our children and our elders, at General Assembly - those vivid gold T-shirt radiating the phrase: "Standing on the Side of Love" (SOTSOL) or more recently, "Side With Love." How do we interpret this call to "side with love?" And what might it mean to be one of the "love people" in your personal and communal life, in your relationships and in your activism, especially beyond your comfort zones?

~ Beacon Town Hall ~
September 22 at 11:30 is an opportunity to get an update on our progress - "Here We Grow". The Building Expansion Team is hosting an informative meeting, during which we will:
- Hear about our project process to date, including a quick tour of the expanded and improved building spaces. This will be followed by an overview of some specific details and features, as well as learning about work yet to be done.
- There will be an opportunity to ask questions and to volunteer for project elements that are Beacon's responsibility:
Building new office space downstairs and relocating furnishings.
Interior painting.
Finishing the background to become an important outdoor space for us.
And, of course you will be urged to continue paying your capital campaign pledge (or to consider making one if you have not yet done so).
The SJA committee leadership has graciously agreed to share this time with the BET, even though their meeting was scheduled earlier. Both sessions will happen concurrently - and we hope that participants in one can sit in on the other if timing works out.

Rev. Robin Redux
An excerpt from my Sept 8 sermon, "Autumn People," - a small pebble in your shoe as you move from Sunday to Tuesday to Thursday to Sunday again.
In his book,
TimeShifting,
Stephen Recht-shaff-en, the co-founder of the spirituality center, Omega Institute, offers us six concrete ways to slow down, to make time for your soul; six achievable ways to live as autumn people.
1.
Learn to be more in the moment
and to be aware that you are actually breathing. Lets' try it...deep breath in, deep breath out.
2.
Establish Time Boundaries
which help you reclaim time when there are no
goals
to achieve. Creating and maintaining these boundaries requires the willingness to evaluate and set clear priorities that reflect what you value most. Hopefully Beacon is one of those things.
But creating good time boundaries also requires the resolve to say, "No" to distractions (like the sinkhole of social media). Shall we practice that? On the count of three, we'll all say, "No."
3.
Honor the Mundane..
.the color of the tomatoes you are slicing for a salad, the smell of your child's hair after a morning shower. Life is more than highlights and a things to be done list.
4.
Create Spontaneous Time.
Paradoxically, in our over scheduled lives, to do this you'll have to schedule spontaneity! Pick a Saturday to be spontaneous or a Sunday afternoon after church. Schedule the day and then let the spirit move you.
5.
Do What you Like to Do.
Color in coloring books, play basketball, garden, fish, do Tai Chi, bang out a song or two on the piano or the kazoo. You have permission.
6.
Create Time Retreats.
We usually refer to these as vacations, but often our vacations are more hectic than our everyday lives. On a time retreat, one rests and reflects and slows down the internal and external rhythm.
Each of these six ways to reclaim time is a life affirming act; a heart-affirming choice.
You may be wondering what church has to do with all this. Simply: Lets not have church be another arena of over functioning, scheduled hyperactivity, and fatigue. I'm preaching to myself, of course. I'm often trying to do more in a day than is possible or healthy. Yet, part of my calling as your minister is to try to model a saner pace, an autumn pace, even when we gather here together nine months hence, amidst the bright green bounty of Spring for a Flower Communion.
My hope is that this church will be your locus to balance passion and pause; good stewardship and good self-care; activity and reflection, sacred covenant with self and others. There is certainly work to done and wonderful ways to be involved and active here. But let this place be an autumn place for you, too; a Sabbath place to be refreshed.

~ Circle Suppers ~
SIGN UP Time for Circle Suppers at Beacon
Break bread with a few other Beaconites
How it works:
- Any Member or Friend of Beacon signs up (with your partner and family, if you wish) by Tuesday September 24. You are signing up to participate in 3-5 potluck Suppers (or brunches or whatever) during October-April. Each Supper is held in the home of one member of the Circle; nobody hosts more than 1 Supper. Hosting is not required, so you can sign up even if your home is too small to host 8 people.
- Paul Beier assembles participants into "Circles" of ~6-8 adults (plus kids in kid-tolerant groups), notifies you of the Circle to which you have been assigned, and assigns one person to be the Ringleader of each Circle.
- The Ringleader of each Circle works with Circle to set the date for the first Supper at the Ringleader's home. At each Supper, the Circle selects a date & host for the next Supper. Continue until all hosts have held events.

What to do:
By Tuesday, September 24, use this
online form to provide your name, email, phone number, and the names of other adults and names & ages of kids who will participate with you. The form will also ask if your home can accommodate babies (<36 months) and kids (3 years and older), and will allow you to provide other information, such as "my house is too small for me to host" or "I will be gone all of September" or "please put me in a circle with Barack" or "please don't put me in a circle with Paul."

Find the clipboard (carried by Paul or Maryann or Dora or Carleton) at a Sunday service during September and fill out the information by hand.
If you can't remember if you already signed up for Circle Suppers, just sign up - I will find the duplicates.

Touchstones Chalice Circles are designed to meet our needs for belonging (intimacy) and meaning (ultimacy) by building friendships and providing opportunities to ponder life's questions, small and large, with others who share the common values of our UU Principles.
Chalice Circle continues to meet on the 4th Sunday & Tuesday of each month. Discussion examines subjects as provided in the monthly journal of Unitarian Universalism,
Touchstones.
To meet the needs of the congregation, we have made attendance open.

~ REI Building Project Update ~
So much is going on inside the building this week! The drywall is up, and the finishing work, which involves several coats of mud and sanding, is proceeding. The workers are also doing some repairs of the hallway, so much of the building is off-limits until late Friday, when they hope to be finished. Then comes texturing, and after that we Beaconites take over and start painting. We hope to start painting the two new rooms the middle of next week, and then paint the sanctuary the following week (starting around Sep 23).
We have finished painting the former purple room and kitchen, in preparation for these rooms becoming the new offices. It seems we will have painted almost the entire interior of the building by the end of the project!
A reminder, if you haven't heard: we will be holding a Town Hall on Sep 22 after the service, for the purpose of giving an update on the construction, and how we will proceed after the contractors are finished. There are a number of small projects that will need to be completed, and we are lining up teams and Beacon talent to do these. We hope that many people will volunteer to help finish beatifying our Beacon home!

UUJAZ (UU Justice Arizona) network's annual fall gathering.
An opportunity to learn more about this year's events is now on the UUJAZ website! You'll see that there are some schedule, content and cost changes, including provision for yoga, siesta, dinner (and overnight home hospitality, if needed), and a worship service Sunday morning.
To learn more, go online to uujaz.org and click on "Learn More" for the schedule of activities for Issues and Action Day 2019.
We are exploring possibilities for scholarships for the "whole enchilada" (Saturday and Sunday programming) as well as one-day financial support. We'll have more information about that in our SJA meeting on the 22

Group-Volunteer Events - Sign up!
KNAU is gearing up for their Fall pledge drive, and Beacon has volunteered to help out.
We currently have 3 volunteers to answer phones but could use two more.
It will be from 6:45 am - 9 am on Sept 18. Breakfast will be provided.
They announce the Beacon name over the air, and train us on what we will be doing. If the phones aren't busy (like when they are broadcasting the regular morning show) we can just sit and chat! Send me an email at

~ September Share the Plate Partner ~
Beacon is sharing the plate with Poore Free Medical Clinic for September 2019
Founded in 1911 by Dr. Henry Poore, the clinic offers free medical and dental care to low income, uninsured individuals and families living in Coconino County. The majority of patients are the working poor who qualify because they live at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Attending to patient's medical and dental needs enables them to better their lives. The clinic earned the title of Flagstaff Organization of the Year in 2013.
Services offered are Primary Care, Chronic Illness Care, Acute Illness Care, Children's Health, Sports Physicals, and Dental Care.
Dental Services offered are Full dental exam with x-rays, Filling cavities, Simple dental extractions, and Dental cleanings by a hygienist.
Undesignated contributions in this month's offerings above $350 will be presented to the Poore Free Medical Clinic. Nominations for 501c3 agencies can be made through a form located at the bottom of the stairs in the CAC folder. Office@beaconuu.com
