Gold Star Candidate SLJC Medhini Anand
|
I have been a proud Girl Scout since elementary school and I am currently working to my Gold Award Project after successfully completing the Bronze and Silver awards. My Gold Award project is about increasing awareness about the state of our local environment, and the small steps you can take at home to help your local environment. For this project, one of the main goals was to educate and inspire the community. I recently virtually taught my lesson to several girls scouts at their summer camp. To reach out to the community further, I have created a website with my detail lesson plan and information about helping the environment. I would like to request if you could share my website URL and project information with the SLJC community.

Class of 2022 members, Mallika Kulkarni and Aashwin Sharma, are Vice Presidents of the non-profit organization, InspiringTogether. Their mission has been to help foster kids through sports and arts camps, but during this pandemic, they have been providing free online tutoring to those in need. This 501(c) organization has been directing all of their resources and their members’ energy towards helping foster kids. Their initiative has been successful so far, and they have been able to reach several students and bring smiles to their faces.

By Vidhi Tiwary, SLJC Class of 2022
Hello 10 Year Old Vidhi.
I know it sounds crazy, but 5 years from now, you will be living through a major pandemic. I’m pretty sure you don’t know what a pandemic is, so I’ll be quick. You are living through a major disease which is spread through every single country in the world. For 2 months, we were told to stay at home and only leave for the necessities. Although now the self quarantine is being lifted, don’t listen and stay at home unless it’s urgent. I know this all sounds overwhelming on how you can’t leave the house and see your friends, but think of this as a time to improve on yourself. For the past 5 months, I’ve taught myself many new skills, from cooking to coding (and not always being successful)! The main point is to use this time given to you. Don’t think of it as a prison, you’ve been gifted with 5 months, maybe even more, to rest and improve on so many new things. There are so many skills you can learn or improve on, so don’t waste this time by doing nothing! And if you’re ever feeling lonely, don’t, pick up the phone because Facetime and Zoom exist. I trust you will heed my words and stay home unlike many others are doing.
Stay safe and always wear a mask and gloves!

By Charlotte Lichtenfeld, SLJC Class of 2022
Dear 10-year old Charlotte,
I never expected 2020 to unfold this way. If I were, however, able to give my ten-year-old self some future advice, this is what I’d say:
Expect the unexpected- everyone will buy puzzles, so buy them early. Oh, and toilet paper. Toilet paper will become a luxury during 2020, so stock up early. Also, be prepared to spend multiple months stuck in the house with your siblings and the noise from the construction being done by the new neighbors. On a good day, the construction may begin at 10 am and end at 3 pm, Otherwise, tree cutting and hammering begin at eight in the morning and go until eight at night.
Your favorite part about quarantine will be spending time with your family. They will get really into board games, so become really good at the games before-hand so that you can beat them. Specifically, prepare for long games of Risk, but have your brother better explain the rules to everyone before the first game. Otherwise, the game will take even longer than its 3-hour estimated time of play. The weirdest thing about quarantine will be that quarantine has “phases”. There has been a Tiger King Phase, a “let’s go outside” phase, a puzzle phase, and a spring-cleaning phase.
Overall, my advice is to be willing to adapt and to find the positives in 2020. This year’s events, though not anticipated, have been both testing and fun.
