Walk (and Talk) with Your City Council
Enjoy a morning walk with your City Council members on Saturday, September 21 at 9 a.m. Come with your good walking shoes and your ideas or questions for one-on-one conversations. We’ll meet at the Lower Quarry and take a leisurely hike through Memorial Park’s prairies. See you there!
Join the Conversation on Climate Change
Image of Earth with the words Together for a Livable Planet
Here's your chance to join the climate change conversation at a local level. On Saturday, September 21, in partnership with the League of Women Voters and Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), the Red Wing Sustainability Commission is hosting a Climate Conversation.

This event is free for community members of all ages. You can learn more about the event and register here.
Single-Sort Starts September 16
Well, that's all of them. Red Wing's new recycling carts have arrived at their new homes just in time for pick-up beginning next week. Council member Becky Norton introduces the new carts and the important information that comes with them.
If you didn't see a packet with your cart, look inside the container. Still not finding it? No worries--the information is available on the City's website.
Your Nominee for Human Rights Award
Who do you know has stood up to promote human rights in the greater Red Wing area? Nominate him or her for the annual Amos Owen Award, presented by the RW Human Rights Commission. Amos Owen was a spiritual leader from Prairie Island Indian Community who worked to preserve Dakota language and culture. You'll find the online and hard-copy nomination forms here. Deadline is September 26, 2019, at 4 p.m. Questions? Email here or call 651-385-3618.
Filling the Final Seat
SPECIAL GENERAL ELECTION
Tuesday, November 5
District 1 County Commissioner

Absentee Voting Starts
September 20
Goodhue County Government Center, Room 208.

If you live in the western half of Red Wing (Wards 1 and 2), in Welch, or in most areas of Prairie Island, you haven't had a Goodhue County representative for seven months. Now Linda Flanders and Darwin Fox are running to capture that seat--and your vote. The winning candidate will be voting on multiple important decisions, including the 2020 county levy amount and how the county manages its solid waste--including a determination on whether or not the county's unlined landfill, located in District 1 of Red Wing, enters the state's Closed Landfill Program.

Can You Find it?

Our mystery item this week sits in a park that now boasts a new, interactive challenge-course playground, so this week, we're giving you an extra challenge. Where is this ASL (American Sign Language) sign located, and what does it say? Send the location and its message to this email address here and you may win this week's City Beat prize. Thanks to Live Healthy Red Wing, the Red Wing School District, Mayo Clinic Health System-Red Wing, and the City of Red Wing for this fun park project.
Money Talk
Save The Date
* Wed. 10/30: 5:30 Budget Workshop
* Tues. 11/19: 7:00 Public Hearing on the
2020-2024 Capital Improvement Plan
* Mon. 12/2: 6:00 Public Hearing and
Council Meeting to Vote on 2020 Levy
Making smart decisions with your tax dollars is one of the most important responsibilities Council members have, so they work hard to do what's best. At last week's budget workshop, Council reviewed preliminary budget and levy options, and staff will come back on October 30 with ideas for cutting projects and other expenses. The goal is to continue with Red Wing's long-term financial plan while keeping the levy manageable for you, the taxpayers.

Earlier Library Hours
For those who wish they had more hours to spend at the Public Library, wish granted! Beginning Tuesday, September 3 and running through the end of the year, the Red Wing Public Library is opening an hour earlier on weekdays at 9 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. It's a months-long experiment by the Library Board, so if you've got a suggestion, call Library Director Jessica McGee: 651-385-5105.
City Beat Winners
You may have seen us out this summer spreading the word about City Beat. Thanks to you, we have hundreds more people reading City Beat each month. We tossed the names of all new readers into a big hat and drew winners (because we love prizes). Our big winner is Marie Peters, who won the new Kindle 7 Fire Tablet. Other lucky winners received Sheldon tickets, Colvill Pool season passes, fire-station tours, lunch with the Mayor, and more. If you haven't received a notification email from us, you'll just have to wait until next summer. Thanks, everyone!
City Beat Correction: Last issue we reported that the main Memorial Park overlook remodel would be funded in part by Noontime Kiwanis, who would donate up to $150,000. We should have said that Noontime Kiwanis is donating their time in raising most of those funds from multiple, generous area donors. We apologize for the error.
