PG'S PEN
Starting this Sunday, and continuing through Oct. 20, you will be hearing a lot about what LCGS has meant to those who have been touched by our ministry, and what this Family of Faith will mean to us, this community, and the world in the year ahead. Myself, Bill Johnson, and the "Trusteeship Team" have adopted an initiative to tell LCGS's story and envision our future we're calling "MINISTRY 2020." Look for a letter from Bill and me with information regarding how, through God's grace, we hope to follow Jesus Christ, loving one another and serving all, with thanksgiving and a vision of the future driven by Five Strategic Objectives adopted by LCGS at the end of last year.
Be in church this Sunday as we kick off MINISTRY 2020 with an array of exciting events. The emphasis will be on "meaningful, life-changing WORSHIP." We will have special music, both at the "Day Break" service at 8 am and at the 10:30 am worship service. A special "Because of You" Moment will be part of both services and presented by one of our college students, Anthony Zuniga (who will also be singing at the early service). New choir robes will be dedicated and two new members, Jerry Chappell and Debra Kelly Greene, will be welcomed during the 10:30 service. And I'm planning on sharing with you in the sermon one of my favorite short stories of what "being Church" is about according to Jesus.
In the weeks ahead, the hope is that MINISTRY 2020 will give you a clear vision of your critical role in the ministry of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, and of what we can be "because of you" in the year and years ahead.

MINISTRY 2020
This Sunday begins our focus on the ministry of this church in the upcoming year. We will be highlighting several of the ministries which are and will be important parts of LCGS. Each member will receive a mailing next week detailing the elements of Ministry 2020. In addition, each Sunday there will be a short presentation that will describe one of these ministries and what they mean to those who are involved. We believe that God is calling us to change people's lives. We want to see and hear how we are doing that, and how God might be calling each of us to participate.
On the last Sunday of this campaign,
October 20
, we will have a celebration luncheon as part of our commitment to these ministries. During worship over the next five Sundays, we will hear about ministries in worship, outreach, member care, education and fellowship. Be watching and listening for where we are going and how we will get there.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES
Sunday School classes begin at 9:10 a.m. Child care is available for children five and younger in the nursery.
Elementary School Children
This group will begin with music in the choir room, then return to room 3 for a lesson using the Godly Play approach.
Confirmation Class
This class is studying the 10 Commandments and will meet in the Fellowship Hall on September 15.
DiGG Class
Bill Moore is leading the group (Delving into God's Goodness adult class) in a four-part study that he is calling "The Power of Paradox to tell the Good News."
On
September 15
, Bill will analyze how paradoxes work in some extremely thoughtful and intensely felt sonnets.
The Intersections Class welcomes high school youth who have been confirmed and adults to talk about a variety of topics that connect faith and life. On
September 15, the class will begin a study of the book
8 Habits of Love: Overcome Fear and Transform Your Life. Even if you haven't read the book, you are welcome to join in the discussion.

LIVING COMPASS SMALL GROUP
Good Shepherd's Reimagining Health Collaborative team will offer a small group to friends and members of Good Shepherd
beginning on Tuesday, October 1. The group will focus on wellness that encompasses the whole person and will meet for six consecutive weeks, ending on November 5. The group is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., but the time will be adjusted, if needed.
What is Living Compass?
The Living Compass curriculum is based on these core beliefs:
- The fruits of wellness and wholeness emerge from the seeds of faith in our lives.
- Each of us is responsible for the decisions we make to nurture our own wellness/wholeness.
- Wellness must encompass the whole person (heart, soul, strength, and mind).
- Individual wellness does not exist in isolation but is connected to ALL our relationships.

NEW CHOIR ROBES - FINALLY!
The LCGS Choir is happy to report that the last of our new robes have finally been delivered! Given our growing numbers, this will hopefully end the weekly Sunday morning challenge we like to call "Who Has My Robe Today?" The new robes complement those worn by our Assisting Ministers, are accented with a simple wooden cross, and are also a little more "breathable" than the existing gold ones (which will be cleaned and donated to a church in need as identified by the Synod office). Look for the new robes this Sunday, September 8. The robes will be dedicated during worship on September 15. We thank all the congregation members who, to date, have generously funded approximately 70% of the total cost of the robes - we could not have done this without your support!

BOOK CLUB

HERITAGE SUNDAY
On Sunday, September 29, Good Shepherd will celebrate Heritage Sunday. We would like for everyone to plan on bringing a dessert or salad from their ethnic background to share during coffee hour. CELEBRATE HELPING PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS
The next meeting of the Brevard Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) will celebrate the accomplishments of this chapter during the seven years of its existence.
The meeting will be
Saturday, September 14
, at 1:00 p.m. in Good Shepherd's Fellowship Hall. The room will open at 12:30 p.m. so people can sign in, browse the free literature, grab a snack, and meet others interested in discussing hearing problems and solutions. Captions will be provided.

Kay Bradburn, the daughter of former member Eileen Rhyne, passed away on August 31.
Charlie Bradburn, Kay's husband, is also having health issues.

having outpatient arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday, September 13, at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.
Bev Ketsenberg, friend of Barbara Hotaling, has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Bev's husband, Al, is also experiencing health issues.

NOISY OFFERING
Our next "noisy offering" will take place on
Sunday, September 29, when the children will collect your pocket change in metal buckets (hence, the noise). The children decided last spring that this offering will benefit
The Haven, our county's homeless shelter, which includes a separate facility for families with children.
Start rounding up your change! If your change jar happens to be low, bills and checks will be gratefully accepted by the children. Thank you!

CROP WALK
Brevard CROP Walk 2019, an event organized through Church World Service that raises money to alleviate hunger locally and worldwide, will be on Sunday, October 13, beginning and ending at Brevard Middle School. Sign-in time is 1:30 p.m., and the walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. The walk itself is a relatively easy three miles around town, with friends from other churches and organizations in our county.
An information table will be set up during coffee hour after the 10:30 worship service for questions, sign-up info, donations, etc. Online donations to "Team LCGS" can also be made

Last year, Brevard had over 150 walkers of all ages, and raised about $15,000, with several thousand of that going to our local Sharing House.
Please join our team, in person or with your contribution -- and also invite your friends to join us in this fun, important event.

MEALS FOR THE HAVEN
LCGS will be preparing meals and baked goods for The Haven for the weekend of September 27-29. You are invited to take part as we accompany our neighbors and share God's love with them through food. Please consider volunteering to help prepare the meals in the church kitchen on Friday, September 27 at 2:00 p.m. or donating baked goods and delivering them to the church kitchen by Friday, September 27 at 2:00 p.m. Thank you.

HURRICANE RELIEF
Hurricane Dorian caused widespread damage and loss of life, particularly in the Bahamas and along the coast of North Carolina.
Lutheran Disaster Response is providing survivors of this hurricane with immediate relief, and accompanying them on the long road to recovery. Your gifts will be used entirely (100 percent) for direct response until it is complete. If you would like to make a donation, please make your check payable to LCGS and indicate "LDR - Hurricane Response" on the memo line. BREVARD COLLEGE MUSIC FACULTY SHOWCASE
On
Sunday, September 15, Brevard College will present its annual Music Faculty Showcase. Our own Kathye Gresham and Vance Reese will perform. The show is free and will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Porter Center.

RISING FROM HOMELESSNESS
You are invited to attend this special event, hosted by the Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County, on
Monday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m., at 24 Varsity Street in Brevard. Speaker Eric Edwards will share his personal story of rising from despair to social activism. There is no charge for the event, which will illustrate the concept of accompaniment and what it can look like in real life.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK
On
Sunday, October 6, the Asheville chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will host a community walk to bring awareness to the growing issue of suicide in our society and to raise funds to support research, educational programs and survivors of suicide loss. The walk will take place in Asheville's Carrier Park beginning at 1:00 p.m. Outreach Ministry Coordinator Kimberly Dunbar will participate in the walk. Please contact her if you'd like to attend (

To be the church is to care for people in need. This was one of the main observations when eleven recently elected Lutheran church leaders met in Geneva and Wittenberg, to exchange about their churches, discuss challenges and good practice-examples and get to know the wider LWF communion. They come from nine countries and four continents.
