2021 NAECR Policy Fellows convene for first meeting
|
|
NAECR Policy Fellows gathered Oct. 19 for their first meeting of the year. They were joined by members of First Five Nebraska to discuss their areas of research and interest/experience with policy.
Katie Bass of First Five Nebraska provided an overview of the legislative process in Nebraska, including how legislative sessions are structured, how bills are introduced and progress through the system, and how legislative committees form and conduct their work.
She talked about various ways that researchers can participate in a legislative hearing and discussed how First Five Nebraska's involvement in the process and what types of projects or bills are worked on.
Along with Bass, participants included policy fellows Alexandra Daro, Jenna Finch, Anne Karabon, Marisa Macy and Amanda Prokasky; and First Five Nebraska's Adam Feser and and Jason Prokop.
At the next meeting, the policy fellows will share information about their research, focusing on its ties to practice and policy. First Five and the policy fellows will continue to explore connections between research and policy throughout the year.
NAECR Policy Fellows objectives include:
- Educating educate NU early childhood researchers on local, state and federal policy processes, impacts and relationships to research;
- Providing the Nebraska policy community with insight into the University of Nebraska’s latest early childhood research;
- Creating meaningful, bi-directional connections and collaborations among the research and policy communities to develop a policy relevant; and
- Developing a research agenda and enrich early childhood experiences.

New! Spencer Foundation Small Education Research Grants
The Small Research Grants Program supports education research projects that contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived. This program is "field-initiated" in that proposal submissions are not in response to a specific request for a particular research topic, discipline, design, method or location.

The primary purpose of the Collaboration Initiative is to enhance the competitiveness of University of Nebraska faculty for extramural funding by fully leveraging intellectual capacity and research resources across the campuses. The funding opportunity is designed to facilitate and strengthen research collaborations among NU faculty.

National Science Foundation Development Sciences Program
The Developmental Sciences Program supports basic research that increases our understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural and biological processes related to human development across the lifespan.
Research supported by this program will add to our knowledge of the underlying developmental processes that support social, cognitive and behavioral functioning, thereby illuminating ways for individuals to live productive lives as members of society.
Expected award budget: $100,000 – $200,000

UNL Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition
The Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Research and Economic Development have committed $40 million toward the Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition. Up to $10 million is available for allocation each year in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Letter of intent deadline: Feb. 28, 2022.

Funding Forecast: Secondary Analyses of Child Care Data, Secondary Analyses of Head Start and Early Head Start Data
The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families plans to solicit applications in 2022 for two new research grant programs. Findings from both programs are intended to inform policy, program administration and future research.
Secondary Analyses of Child Care Data
Proposals will support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data to address key questions of relevance to the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF).
