Weekend Lineup
Kolaches in Caldwell;
Schuetzenfest in Round Top!

Czech it out! 50,000 kolaches in the oven for festival celebration!
The 35th Annual Kolache Festival is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 14 in Caldwell, the Kolache Capital of the World. This event begins at 8 am and continues around the downtown area "on the square" until 5 pm. The festival covers the Courthouse Square and spills over into the adjoining streets and businesses to host more than 20,000 visitors. Admission is free.

A local favorite is the Kolache Eating Contest which will be held at 11 am on Buck Street right next to the Bake Shoppe Tents. The Kolache Eating Contest consist of individuals and team competitors entertaining the crowd in their quest to become the champion eating contestant in their categories with cash prizes and caps awarded. There are plenty of Kolache Bake Shoppe vendors to buy kolaches by the dozen - eat some and take the rest home.

The Kolache Festival will feature continuous entertainment starting at 8 am with Edward Kopecky & Fun Time Czech Band playing for the 5K participants. The Shiner Hobo Band will play 11A-1P; new this year is Battle of the Bands between The Moravians & Czech And Then Some (CATS) from 1-5P.

The festival features Adventure-Land for children at the Fire Station Parking Lot, Quilt Show at the Civic Center, the Street Rod & Classic Car Show and an Antique Machinery & Tractor Show at Davidson Creek Park.  Approximately 200-plus juried arts and crafts vendors will be scattered throughout the Festival. In addition, you can visit the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum and also visit the Kraitchar House Museum where there will be demonstrations.

Hail Schützenfest könig
Members of the Rifle Association in Round Top are gearing up for Schuetzenfest on Sun., Sept. 15, a shooting contest that results in the crowning of the könig (king), who is the Rifle Association member with the best score after three rounds of shooting. New this year will be an appearance direct from Germany by the Musikkapelle Markt Erkheim, the original Bavarian Blasmusik group, whose Korbinian Karrer Society celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2004. The 22-member authentic Bavarian brass band will perform at 3 pm.

At 5 pm, the new könig will receive his crown of cedar and a gold medal from the previous king. At that point, some members (usually youngest and strongest) hoist the new König into the air three times to the shouts of "Hoch soll er leben, hoch soll er leben, drei mal hoch (For he's a jolly good fellow.)" The new könig does have responsibilities though, the first of which is to treat the RTRA members and their guests to a nice cold keg of beer, direct from Paulner Brewery in Munich, Germany!  Clayton Weishuhn has won the shooting title for two consecutive years. Can he make it three?

Enjoy a great meal of barbecue sausage, German potatoes, and coleslaw. All this pageantry is followed by a free dance from 6:30-8:30 pm with music by Donnie Wavra & The Hi-Liters.

Dream about kolaches and Polka On!

Happy 5th anniversary to Theresa Parker and Gary McKee. Yes, they have been publishing the Texas Polka News for 5 years! Theresa and Gary reflect on this accomplishment. This issue has lots of photos and recaps the polka ride over the past 5 years. Gary also gives a thumbs up to dancers in training - those young kids having fun on the dance floor. Justin Everett reviews an oldie but a goodie CD by the Red Ravens and profiles DJ Heidi from Denton. He also helps us remember Rosie Mikula who recently passed away. Festival season has begun. WEEKLY LAUGH
A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. He took out a business card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed at the next worship service, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, "Genesis 3:10." Reaching for his Bible to check out the verse, he broke up in gales of laughter.

Revelation 3:20 begins, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked."
