Leadership from Everywhere
In the book, "Change" How Organizations Achieve Hard-to-Imagine Results in Uncertain and Volatile Times, author John P. Kotter, Harvard Business School leadership professor, explains how traditional leadership models - a few key people at the top of a hierarchy provide leadership and a much larger group in the middle provide management - is not the ideal leadership model to create a culture that helps you adapt and respond to faster and more complex change. He explains the concept of 'leadership from below' and a 'dual system' that promotes leadership at all levels of the organization that is needed to develop and act on strategic initiatives, overcome barriers, keep momentum building and actually make and sustain change.
As we recently devoted our ISCA Fall Governance Conference to the topic of organizational resiliency, it seems fitting to share this book as a follow up.
"Leadership is about establishing a direction and vision for the future, aligning people around that vision, and then motivating and inspiring them to take action. Leadership mobilizes people to overcome significant barriers, create difficult change, and, in extreme cases, achieve truly astonishing results."
