Historical Tidbit: Early Education
The Schoolhouses were placed close to the roads to make it easier to get to in bad weather. Remember that the children only went to school during the winter months, as they were needed on the farms to help during the spring and summer.
The stove would most likely be put on a north wall, as that would be the coldest side of the building. As children of all ages were in the building, the stove would be placed away from where they would be studying.
Over time, there was also a two month and seven day summer term & the winter term went for two months and four days. It was entirely a different way of living than what we are used to today. Those that were teaching the summer terms were paid $16.00 & for winter terms they were paid $36.00.

Get Your Grants Ready Whitman Artists!
Mass Cultural Council's Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, humanities, and sciences annually. Each year, LCCs award more than $3 million in grants. Currently, there are 329 local and regional councils that represent all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth, these councils are local volunteers, approving grants for local arts & culture projects.
Applicants may apply to the LCC Program for projects, operating support, ticket subsidy programs, artist residencies, fellowships or other activities, based on local priorities and needs. LCCs may also choose to fund cultural field trips for children, grades pre-K through 12, by subsidizing the cost for children to attend programs in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences (including performances, educational tours and exhibits).
The LCC application process can be quite competitive. Because of the large number of requests and the limited funds available for regranting, many LCCs receive far more applications than they can fully, or even partially, fund. Average grants tend to be modest ($500-$750). Application Guidelines

Census 2020 Info

Why Are there Census Takers in My Neighborhood?
You might see census takers in your neighborhood for a few different reasons:
  • They are verifying addresses in preparation for the census.
  • They are collecting responses to the census or another survey.
  • They are dropping off census materials.
  • They are conducting quality checks on the census.
Census takers who verify addresses are called address canvassers. They help ensure an accurate and complete count by verifying address lists across a wide area of physical geography, housing structures, and residence types.
Part of this effort involves census takers on the ground noting where houses, apartments, shelters, and other residences are located. Census takers will attempt to knock on every door in the neighborhood they are canvassing.

Census takers will begin visiting homes in 2020 to collect responses from those who did not respond online, by phone, or by mail. At the same time, there will be other surveys ongoing, such as the American Community Survey, so there will also be census field representatives visiting homes for other reasons as well.

How Can I Verify the Identity of a Census Worker?
If you are visited by someone from the U.S. Census Bureau, here are some tips to assure the validity of the field representative:
  • Census takers must present an ID badge that includes a photograph of the field representative, a Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.
  • Note that census workers may be carrying a Census Bureau phone or a laptop as well as a bag with a Census Bureau logo.
  • If you still have questions, call 800-923-8282 to speak with a local Census Bureau representative.

It Takes Courage

It takes courage to believe in yourself, confidence that your ideas and views are of value. Take heart.... None of us has ALL the answers. Your voice is important!

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
~ Winston S. Churchill

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” ~E.E. Cummings

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. - Atticus Finch”
~ Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” ~Coco Chanel
