How Postural stability, trunk strength, upper extremity strength affects fine motor skills

Postural Stability and control is the ability to maintain an upright trunk position by
using righting and equilibrium adjustments to maintain balance while performing
functional movements. It also refers to developing and maintaining body posture
while sitting, standing or engaging in activities. In children this is an important
component. As the child begins school he/she will need to sit and engage in
activities for extended periods of time.
Furthermore, postural stability and core strength (core muscles are those muscles
that stabilize the shoulder girdle, spine and pelvis) affect and contribute to
effective arm movement and control. A stable core provides a solid base of support
from which the arms are free to move with precision and control, which is important for developing fine motor skills.  Without good postural control and core strength, a child may have difficulty maintaining an upright sitting position and may fatigue easily when sitting at a desk in school.  In addition, using the hands well will be difficult as the child puts his energy to control and maintain his posture rather then focus on the task at hand.  When postural control is adequate, the hands may be used effectively for working on tabletop tasks, such as writing, coloring and cutting.

For the hands to work well, and for the fingers to have precise movements, it is
necessary to have strength, stability and mobility in the core muscles, shoulders,
forearms and wrist.  This is a great inspiration to get kids outside, run around, bend, climb, explore and navigate obstacles.  Enjoy knowing that you are building their ability to control their fine motor muscles too!
