Be a part of something bigger
Jump into workshops that take a big picture view of greening efforts in Marion, Oaklands Park and Park Holme.
Two workshops. Interactive and online.
The workshops are for people who are already involved in a greening activity, as well as those curious about starting (or bringing in) something new to Marion, Oaklands Park and Park Holme suburbs.
'Greening activities' can be ‘on the ground’, such as community gardens, workshops and tree management, or even ‘on the administration side’, like developing policies, grants and plans. They're projects, services or initiatives that help to make the area greener.
It would be great if you could make it to both workshops!
Discovery workshop
- 10am – 12pm, Friday 12 June via Zoom.
- We’ll explore findings from conversations from the first stage of Greening Marion, where we looked at how current greening efforts fit into the bigger picture.
- We'll also create a collective vision of how we all want to experience greener, more sustainable suburbs.
Strengthening workshop
- 10am – 12pm, Friday 19 June via Zoom.
- We’ll tweak and adapt current greening activities, or consider bringing new ones into the mix, to make our whole system stronger.
Please note: these workshops are to specifically focus on activities that impact or influence greening in the Greening Marion pilot area – Marion, Oaklands Park and Park Holme suburbs.

In these sessions you will:

- Learn how to get going
- See how your actions fit into the big picture of collective change
- Create a network of like-minded individuals, households and families.

Native Bees in your backyard

Explore the special role of native bees and how to attract these pollinators to your garden in this online workshop.
Join Jenny Deans to discover:
* what native bees look like, and where they live
* the importance of native bees in our environment
* how to make a bee hotel
* how to create a bee garden to attract native bees
* how to care for our native bees
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during the session, and we will send notes and links to all registrants via email following the session.

Meet the Environmental Sustainability Team from the City of Marion
|
Each edition we will profile a different staff member. Today we introduce you to.....
Dani Austin (Community Gardens Coordinator)
What you do in your role: I support the seven (and counting!) community gardens within City of Marion. I am often creating and collating resources and events for the community gardens to help them grow – both food and their community. Part of my role is also troubleshooting any issues they have as there has sadly been theft of plants in the past, but equally there are many exciting projects they need support with. You’ll normally find me liaising with garden members, working with other local councils on shared projects, chatting to internal staff (shout out to the wonderful open space team), and if I’m lucky, getting my hands dirty in the community gardens.
Something interesting about you
: I am an immigrant to Australia and am now an Australian citizen. After arriving eight years ago my interest and involvement in Kaurna culture has been steadily growing, and has inspired me to connect to all my ancestors and so have started learning to play the fiddle – my I hope musical celtic ancestors would be proud.

Oaklands Wetland - a refuge for endangered fish
Oaklands Wetland will be a refuge for small-bodied freshwater fish endangered by the drought.
Southern Purple-spotted Gudgeon, and potentially Yarra Pygmy Perch, will be bred in tanks and ponds before being released into the wetland.
Introduced fish species will be removed prior to the small-bodied fish being released into the wetland.
The project, which is a partnership between the City of Marion, Greening Adelaide, Flinders University, and Aquasave – NGT, aims to secure the long-term survival of the threatened species.
Visitors to the award-winning Oaklands Education Centre will be able to view small-bodied freshwater fish in a demonstration tank.
