FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
As we continue in the month of September with our emphasis on attendance, I’m reminded of a sort of watershed moment in my history of staff leadership. I was working as an Instructional Coach here in the building and, as such, was delivering bi-monthly staff professional development. At the time, our focus was on “rigor”. We were working to help teachers deliver instruction that was not just engaging, but also challenging and requiring of a certain amount of academic risk-taking.

We got to the end of our session and I asked the group for any comments or insights.

“Smith!” said Spanish teacher Peg Herbert from the back of the room. “This ‘rigor’ stuff is great and all. But you’re forgetting something… I can’t ‘rigor’ them if they’re not here.”

She was right, of course, and data collected here since that time proves her point; students who come to class every day get through.

They get through tough classes.

They get through classes taught by teachers with they don’t have a great, natural fit.
And they get through classes that aren’t really in their wheelhouse and require lots of support.

If they’re here, they almost always get through, thanks to teachers who bend over backwards and meet students at lunch and build great supports on their websites and do all of the things that our amazing teachers do.

Next week, our administrators will be visiting our math classes with information about attendance for all of our students; we really want all students to fully understand how critical “showing up” truly is. The presentation is attached here so that you can review it with your Tigers.

Peg was right – we can’t rigor ‘em if they’re not here. Please help us see to it that your Tiger is here every day he or she can be and that if they can’t be, that you’re letting us know so that we can record their attendance correctly. Thanks!

Marybeth Smith
LC Principal

Changes are Coming to AP: We want to take this opportunity to update you on some very important changes that the College Board is implementing this year for the Advanced Placement (AP) program.

The AP experience will largely remain the same - the exams will still be administered in May - but students will now commit to taking the exams in the fall instead of the spring . We will provide directions to on how to commit to the exam online and how to order the exams through the LC Business Office.

All AP students have a College Board account that gives them access to new free online resources from the College Board that their teachers will be using throughout the year. This account also gives students access to their previous PSAT, SAT, and AP test scores.

Each AP Exam costs $94.00 .
  • If your student qualifies for Free/Reduced lunch, the State of Washington will pay 100% of testing fees.
  • We have a small budget set aside to help offset costs for families that do not qualify for Free/Reduced lunch but may still need a little help.
  • LC must submit our AP order by early November, so payments will need to be made prior to the order. If your family has extenuating circumstances preventing you from paying by the deadline, we will work together to find a solution that ensures your child can take the exams.
  • If a student registers for an exam in the fall and decides not to take the test in May there is a mandated $40 cancellation fee. Additionally, if a student decides to register after the fall registration due date, a $40 late fee will be assessed. These prices are set by College Board and are not negotiable.

Next Steps: We will open the registration and payment process October 1- 31 . Students will have to commit to their exams in the College Board account AND complete the registration paperwork for payment at LC. Payments will be made to the Business Office or online through our District payment system. Details will be coming soon.

Additional resources for students and parents can be found at the following sites:

PSAT Day/T-2-4 Day: On Wednesday, October 16, we will be holding our annual PSAT and T-2-4 Day (Technical - 2 Year - 4 Year Colleges). This is a required school day and attendance will be taken.

All Freshmen , Sophomores , and Juniors will be taking the PSAT test at no cost! This test is a practice exam for the SAT test and provides valuable feedback to students on areas of strength and growth.
  • Juniors in Running Start, you may take the test with us, but you'll have to miss your morning college classes (you cannot leave until 12:00pm).
  • Juniors who go to NewTech, you will stay at LC all day for the PSAT test. We will excuse your NewTech absence for you.
