A Summer Filled with
Excitement
AMTA-KY Chapter President Letter
I hope everyone enjoyed their summer.  I have now completed my first year as AMTA-KY Chapter President and couldn't be any happier.

In May, with the help from Bob Babbage and his Team, I applied for the 2019 LLEAD Grant. The application was submitted to AMTA National on May 1, 2019 and we were awarded $15,000 to the chapter to be used from August 1, 2019 - July 31, 2020 for legislative purposes.  Ann Boone and Denise Logsdon attended the National Legislative Conference with Bob Babbage to meet our Kentucky legislators in Nashville, TN, August 6th and 7th.  This meeting was to introduce our AMTA-KY Chapter and Massage Therapy to our legislators.  Since the laws and regulations for Massage Therapy are currently being changed in Kentucky we want to put a face to our profession. See Ann Boone and Denise Logsdon's report below.

In June, I attended the AMTA National Presidents' Meeting in Evanston, IL along with our Financial Administrator, Kala Carby and Laws and
Legislature  Chair, Ann Boone.  This was the first Presidents' Training Session that AMTA National had where we were split up by volunteer positions for two days of training.

What are we working on now? Our main priority is our 2020 Spring Conference to be held in Lexington at the Embassy Suites. Save the date for Thursday , March 12 thru Sunday, March 15, 2020.  When planning these events, we are always listening to our members and getting ideas from other Chapters to help improve our program each year. For our 2019 Spring Conference we upgraded our conference  format by offering Track Classes. According to the attendee surveys, they were extremely happy with the hands on training that they gained by attending a class with a specific tool to use. On the other hand, after hearing from a few members that could not attend, we realized that offering Track Classes is not a one size fits all Member Education experience. Track Classes limited our total conference attendance to around 100 attendees, whereas i n the past years we had about 200+ attendees. So, the AMTA-KY Education  Team got together and are devising a plan to help more of our members achieve the feeling of walking away with a complete tool belt of knowledge by having both Track Options and Module Options.   We are bringing you TWO different ways of choosing YOUR Continuing Education,  allowing you to choose the style of Education class that best fits you to grow professionally and personally. We will start with Ethics in the Evening on Thursday, March 12.  Our Student/Teacher Event and all classes will begin on Friday morning, March 13 continuing though Sunday, March 15.

You can find more information on the 2020 Conference as it develops on FB.  The brochure will be sent out to you via snail mail and e-mail.  Please make sure AMTA National has your correct contact information.

Best Regards,
Caren McCarty
AMTA-KY Chapter President

2020 AMTA-KY Spring Conference
SAVE THE DATE!!!

The dates for the 2020 AMTA-KY Chapter Spring Conference will be March 12-15, 2020 (Thursday through Sunday). It has been determined that Ethics will be offered on Thursday evening, March 12, and Educator/Student events will occur Friday morning, March 13. Education Tracks (12-18 CE) and Modular Classes (4-8 CE) will also begin Friday morning, March 13 continuing through Sunday, March 15. In order to accommodate the feedback given by the 2019 conference attendees, next year's conference will continue to offer some tracked options. There also will be some offerings that are modular to accommodate the attendee that may not be able to attend the entire conference. This will provide more choices for the entire membership. The topics and presenters for both modular and track options are still being discussed. Some of our options include Kelly Lott (Migraine Cold Stone Therapy), Amber Davies (Trigger Point Therapy), Anatomy Trains (Arches and Legs) and TMJ.  These are pending approval from National.

The conference co-coordinators are Eric Byrd and Kim Alexander. If you have any questions, you can reach out to them at [email protected]

If you are interested in volunteering at the 2020 conference, please contact Ann Phillips at [email protected].

We welcome your ideas and assistance to help our AMTA-KY Spring Conference be the most outstanding conference yet!

Laws and Legislation Update
Report from Ann Boone and Denise Logsdon

On August 6th and 7th, Denise Logsdon and Ann Boone had the opportunity to meet with a variety of legislators, lawmakers and our lobbyist, Bob Babbage, in Nashville, TN in a casual setting.  The lawmakers and lobbyists were in Nashville to attend a conference.  The purpose of their visit was for Mr. Babbage, who was hired by AMTA National to monitor issues pertaining to our massage laws in Kentucky, to introduce us to pertinent lawmakers and briefly talk about changes we're hoping to make to our 16 year old licensure law. Some of the topics they were able to discuss were: animal massage licensure, use of microcurrent/BEMER/PEMF devices, and general changes to our CE and educational requirements as well as fees.  Ann and Denise said, "We met many people who will be important allies in helping us pass legislation when the session reconvenes in January.  We have been collaborating with the veterinary and physical therapy boards respectively to discuss animal massage licensure and use of specific "deep physical modality agents" (e.g. BEMER), which are currently out of our scope of practice. It's important to form working relationships with these lawmakers as well as have our licensure laws written and reviewed before the January legislative session begins."

Denise has been instrumental in this entire process as she knows our massage law inside and out. She was the advocate whom worked with the lobbyist to get our law complete in the first place as well as being the immediate past chair of the Kentucky Board for Licensure of Massage Therapy (KBLMT). Ann comments," I have learned so much from her and value her experience and input immensely. I'm lucky and grateful to have her as a mentor in this process."

Ann and Denise were also fortunate to be able to talk to James Specker, National Government Relations chair and his team. They attended the "Kentucky Party" as it was referred to as well as had a vendor booth at the convention center for the week promoting the AMTA. They were able to visit the vendor hall the day after the Kentucky party to speak with Mr. Specker and his team as well visit other booths to discover what was important to different boards/entities in different states.

Denise and Ann are honored to be a part of working hard to make changes that AMTA Kentucky Chapter's Board hope will impact our profession in a positive and useful manner. The Laws and Legislation committee would like to invite input from our members on any changes they would like to influence.
