2018-19 Annual Review
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the new 2019-20 academic year! It is an exciting time for you, for our team, and for the University. The campus is alive with undergraduate students, graduate students, and returning staff and faculty. A promising year lies ahead and, as we look back at the past year, we have much to be proud of and celebrate. From drafting our Strategic Plan, a document that will help us to chart our course through 2024, to deliberative actions toward equity, diversity, inclusivity, and Indigeneity and expanding our community connections, we covered a lot of ground in the 2018-19 academic year that will serve us well as we move into the future.
As we embark on new initiatives, both in the classroom and with our research, I want to take this time to express my gratitude and to celebrate all of the wonderful accomplishments we achieved together last year.
Please take a moment to browse through our
2018-19 Annual Review. It was a year to be proud of - thank you for helping to make Queen's a remarkable place to be. I look forward to what comes next.
Sincerely,
Barbara Crow, PhD
Dean, Arts and Science

Academic Considerations for Extenuating Circumstances
The Request for Academic Considerations for Extenuating Circumstances process has changed as of September 1, 2019.
Academic consideration is meant to help students manage a short-term extenuating circumstance that is beyond their control and could affect their academics. This might be a sudden physical or mental illness, a serious injury or required treatment for the student or a significant other, bereavement (e.g., death of a family member or close friend), or a traumatic event (e.g., sexual assault, divorce). Another example is an absence due to a significant event, such as participating in a varsity championship or performing at a national or international event. There have been changes to:
- the length of absences (now up to 3 days or between 4 days and 3 months)
- the number of up to 3 day requests accepted without documentation (1 per term)
- the types of documentation that can be provided with a request

The path to research success includes many ups and downs and can take you to unexpected places.
Please join us on September 25 as Queen's University hosts the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative, featuring Martin Chalfie, 2008 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.
In a public dialogue moderated by preeminent journalist, André Picard, Dr. Chalfie will be joined by Queen's researcher Dr. Arthur McDonald, 2015 Nobel Laureate in Physics, and Dr. Mona Nemer, Chief Science Advisor to the Government of Canada, to discuss the path to the Nobel Prize and research success.
The event will provide a unique and exclusive opportunity for students, researchers, and community members to interact with some of the most recognized members of the international research community.
Following the discussion there will be a moderated Q&A period, as well as a reception with light refreshments.
