Have a hot concept in the realm of biomedical devices, diagnostics, therapeutics, or digital health/IT that would be a great candidate for commercialization?
mid-stage, translational research funding and resources for
proof-of-concept and late-stage translational studies with a high potential of commercial success.
Innovators from all schools at the University of Michigan, other institutions of higher education, non-profit research centers, and hospital systems across Michigan are eligible to submit projects for funding consideration. Mi-TRAC Awards provide one year of funding in the range of $100K-$250K per project, with cost-sharing required.

FFMI/FCVC Innovation Programs Now Accepting Submissions
|
|
FCVC faculty, staff, trainees, and family members are welcome to submit project ideas to the Innovation Challenge for a chance to win up to $100,000 to propose, test, and implement new innovations. Submissions can be in the form of changes to patient care or potential new products.
Submissions are due Thursday, August 22.

The Aikens Innovation Academy, which provides education, mentorship, and a funding opportunity for innovative projects that impact cardiovascular care, is also accepting applications for its Winter 2020 course.

MI-Pitch Club Showcases Student Projects
|
|
Congratulations to all of the
Path of Excellence in Innovation & Entrepreneurship M1s for the great job they did presenting their Lymphedema Design Thinking projects at the July MI-Pitch Club. The teams were tasked with coming up with innovative ideas for the better management and treatment of Lymphedema. They presented their ideas to a panel of judges, including a Lymphedema patient.
The winning team's project is a new system for Mi-Chart that places more power in the hands of the patient to modify their prescription and fit their individual needs.
Best of luck to all the M1s who are now almost M2s!

Michelle Larkin, Director of Commercialization Programs, and Sara Risch, Biomedical Innovation Specialist, recently attended MedHealth StartUp Day. This event, hosted by the
MedHealth Cluster (a regional collaboration between the biotech ecosystems of SE Michigan and SW Ontario), brought the Department of Health and Human Services "Startup Day" to
TechTown Detroit. Representatives from agencies including the FDA, CDC, ONC, and others presented on their resources available to early-stage biotech innovators as they develop their technologies.

MTRAC award-winning team Xudong (Sherman) Fan, Ph.D., and Kevin Ward, M.D., were recently spotlighted in an article about a small, portable breath monitor they developed that can quickly and accurately detect acute respiratory distress syndrome, an often deadly disease that causes fluid to leak into the lungs and demands early diagnosis.

Alisha John, a former
Biomedical Career Development Program (BCDP) participant, recently accepted a position with MilliporeSigma. The informational interview that Alisha conducted as part of the BCDP course led to two interviews for positions she was interested in, including the position she ultimately accepted. Michigan Drug Discovery RFP Now Available

Applications will be accepted through October 11, 2019.
Up to $75,000 per award is available, with the expectation that most of the awarded funds will be used in U-M core laboratories
to accelerate the drug discovery process. Up to $5,000 of the award can be used for work and supplies outside of the
pre-approved cores.

Celebrate 10 Years of NCRC on August 22
|
|
Ten years ago this summer, what we now know as the North Campus Research Complex was born, when U-M took ownership of a vacant former pharmaceutical research campus in the northeast part of Ann Arbor.
Over the past decade, it’s been transformed into a hub for innovative research and clinical activity. More than 3,500 faculty and staff now
work there.
On August 22, the entire U-M community can help celebrate the 10
th
anniversary of NCRC with special events and tours.
The day begins with a group photo for anyone who works at NCRC, at 11:00am in front of Building 18.
Bring a lunch to the Research Auditorium in Building 10 any time between 12:00pm and 1:30pm to learn about NCRC-based research and other topics, through short talks given by scientists and others.
Take an “NCRSee” self-guided tour anytime between 1:30pm and 3:30pm, using maps that will be available at the main entrances of Buildings 16, 18, 32 and 520. Choose to visit more than a dozen spots on both sides of Huron Parkway, to explore what NCRC has become and what’s yet to come.
Celebrate the anniversary at a reception in the Dining Hall in Building 18 at 3:30pm, with remarks
at 4:00pm by Drs. Marschall Runge, Steven Kunkel, and David Canter, followed by refreshments
until 5:30pm.

Request for Proposals! Make the Move to the Newly-Renovated Research Space at NCRC

Michigan Medicine is now accepting submissions for research programs to take advantage of 75,000 square feet of newly renovated space at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC).
Final applications are due on Monday, September 9.
“Over 3,500 research faculty and staff already call NCRC home,” said Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., Medical School Interim Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Associate Dean for Research. “Our goal is to bring together highly collaborative faculty and their teams, leveraging NCRC’s already robust research environment and Michigan Medicine’s strengths by aligning interests, expertise, and technologies.”
