Dear Colleagues,
With support from leadership at CDPH we have come to the tough decision to cancel the Mini College on March 26 in Sacramento. We plan to reschedule the Mini College to September.
We based our decision on guidance received internally from UCSF regarding social distancing and out of concern for protecting the health of fellows and local health department representatives who are playing critical roles in the COVID-19 response in their local communities. The Governor’s State Budget Proposal, released in January, would represent the largest budget in the state's history
, with the greatest funding going toward Health and Human Services (32.1%).
|
Some specific examples from three categories:
- Improve the quality of subsidized school meals
- Encourage participation in state/federal school nutrition programs
- Train school food service workers to promote healthier meals
- Establish a CA Farm to School Grant Program
- Establish or support food pantries at community college campuses
- Provide a $1M one-time General Fund investment for library districts to develop summer meal programs for students in low-income communities
- Support existing Emergency Fund Assistance Program providers and food banks to increase food purchasing to partially mitigate the loss of CalFresh benefits due to federal rule changes
- Maintain the GetCalFresh.org website, a statewide online application assistance tool that provides a streamlined application experience and allows clients to apply on multiple platforms.

NAP), which would negatively impact households with low income, un/underemployment, and aging adults.

This proposed rule by USDA would allow designated substitutions to count toward minimum fruit and vegetable serving requirements in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).

As you know well, health is intimately tied to both food security and nutrition. In California, our food assistance safety net does not adequately make nutritious food affordable for far too many people. At SPUR, we are working to strengthen the safety net by making healthy food incentives a permanent supplement to the state’s CalFresh (food stamps) program and by incorporating medically-supportive food interventions into MediCal. We are working both on the ground – by implementing Double Up Food Bucks with numerous grocery stores in the Bay Area – and in the policy arena to secure the long-term funding needed to achieve both these goals. Doctors and public health professionals like you are unique messengers and partners – and we’re always looking to broaden our coalition. If you’re interested in working to make healthy food more affordable for your patients, and the general public, please reach out!

- Identify potential long-term revenue sources for statewide expansion
- Advocate for medically-supportive food interventions to be included in state’s Medicaid waiver application to the federal government so that these interventions can be reimbursed by public insurance programs in California.
