FCT Presents Seussical The Musical
August 30 - September 15, 2019
ONLY 3 more performances left!

  Fun for the whole family!

The celebrated books and beloved characters of Theodor Geisel (more famously known as Dr. Seuss) come alive on The Fauquier Community Theatre (FCT) stage in this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza.

These classic, colorful tales that are loved by millions of children and also "former children" are seamlessly brought together by all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, The Cat in the Hat and all of the Whos of Whoville!

The musical is a mashup of the Dr. Seuss classics, centering especially on two: "Horton Hears a Who" and "Horton Hatches the Egg," and dropping in characters from at least 15 other books accommodating the FCT cast of 30+ characters who sing and dance into our memory!

The actors will knock your socks off as they will have you toe-tapping, clapping and singing along with them as they share their GREAT talent with you!

The set is designed well and craftily constructed to facilitate many choreographic high-kicking, lively moments designed by Alanna Mensing. The costumes co-designed by Amber Kiffney, Micki Lindquist and Teena Stevic are bright, delightful, and colorful. The costumes certainly add to the vibrancy of the Seuss imagination and creativity. This is a show that celebrates friendship and community as much as the power of the individual imagination. It also teaches the power of being unique and the importance of fighting for your beliefs.

Dr. Seuss would be delighted.

FCT Presents:
Lost in Yonkers
A Comedy by Neil Simon
"The best play Simon ever wrote." - New York Post
" Broadway desperately needs a comedy, a drama, and a hit. With Lost in Yonkers, Mr. Simon has given us all three." - Wall Street Journal

" One of Simon's most impressive and funniest plays." - New York Daily News

" Laughter and tears have come together in a new emotional truth. There are moments in this play when you experience a new kind of laughter for Simon, a silent laughter that doesn't explode into a yuk but implodes straight into your heart." - Newsweek

The Fauquier Community Theatre (FCT) has chosen a Neil Simon Comedy Drama for its fall show in honor of the recently deceased king of snappy one-liners, the ever talented, Mr. Neil Simon. This story is considered one of his best and most affective works as it is a deeply moving play full of heart and emotion.  The director, Don Bachmann (from FCT's Steel Magnolias & Greater Tuna) has struck a great balance between poignancy and humor in this great play about dysfunctional family dynamics. Bachmann also designed the intricate set depicting a historical traditional living room of the 1940's.

The action is filtered through the eyes of two Bronx wise-guys,15-year-old Jay (Cameron Dean) and his ginger-topped brother, Arty (Jake Miller), who is two years younger. In New York City in 1942 Jay and Arty are forced to live temporarily with their unwelcoming Grandma Kunitz (Catherine Stuart) while their now widowed father Eddie (Jim Constable), is forced to take a job on the road to pay off his wife's medical debt from a loan shark. Constable brings out the gentle side in his character and portrays very well a likeable character that one cannot help to empathize with his current tragedy.

A steely Jewish refugee from Germany, Grandma lives above her candy store in Yonkers, but there's nothing sweet about her. Stuart plays the loathsome character with believability. Aunt Bella (Rebecca Heine), herself a little kooky, lives with and takes care of Grandma and is happy to have the boys move in. Eventually, shady Uncle Louie (Ricardo Padilla) arrives for a brief stay in order to evade some equally shady men who are looking for him, and the story truly begins to unfold. Padilla delivers a great performance in playing the bad apple of the family.

Heine plays Bella with great care and tenderness. And though Grandma is mean and stubborn at the core, when we finally are able to  investigate her history, the climax is a beautiful rendering of the difficult truths that lie at the core of both women. Dean and Miller (the two precocious teens) play off each other very well with their quick wit and sassiness.  Gert (Dawn Gaynor), another adult sibling, is a complete Nervous Nellie around her mother (grandma). Gaynor shows great talent as she masters Gert's quirks.

Kudos to costume designer Micki Lindquist on a change for every one of the scenes; the ensembles fit both the period and the characters very well.

FCT 's production of Lost in Yonkers, directed by Don Bachmann and produced by Dawn Fansler, will be held from October 4, 2019 - October 20, 2019. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 pm, and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. Tickets are $16 for students and seniors, and $18 for adults. More information and reserved seating for all of the performances is available online at www.FCTstage.org or by calling 540-349-8760.

NEW & IMPROVED LIGHTING
Exciting things are happening with Fauquier Community Theatre at the Theater on the Green in Vint Hill, VA. After over forty years of providing entertainment and opportunity for the community, FCT has embarked on a campaign to modernize aging lighting equipment with state-of-the-art lighting.

The Theater on the Green is an intimate setting where you and 200 of your fellow theater goers sit close to the performance and are immersed in the magic of the story told by the volunteers on the stage and behind the scenes. Although the stage is only 450 ft2 (smaller than a two car garage), FCT has been fortunate to have a talented group of directors transform this space and transport patrons to the streets of London, dungeons of Duloc, Maraczek's Perfumeri, Truvy's Beauty Spot and the imaginative worlds of Dr. Seuss. Lighting is key to drawing the audience into the magic that is theater, the right lighting becomes another character of the show and enhances emotions of fear, sadness, joy and anger and helps to convey those emotions from the actor to every seat in the house. Lighting also ensures the actors, set work, makeup, and wonderful costumes all can be seen; after all, without lighting it's just radio.

For several years FCT has operated a basic set of conventional lights. These lights consisted of fixtures with a single control to adjust the intensity, a single color choice and one focus for the entire show. Each fixture utilized a 575W-750W incandescent light bulb which became very hot, consumed a lot of electricity, were noisy and made it uncomfortable for costumed actors on stage. FCT has replaced many of their incandescent fixtures with theatrical LED fixtures developed by Chauvet and Elation Lighting which open up new dimensions of creativity for directors. The fixtures selected are full color LED fixtures which enable each fixture to provide shades of white from candlelight to daylight as well as millions of colors during a show. To date FCT has incorporated 14 full color Ellipsoidal, 14 full color Fresnel, 12 full color Wash, and 4 high Intensity warm white Ellipsoidal fixtures. The immediate benefits have been a cooler operating temperature, less ambient noise, better color balance, and a very colorful stage.

The transition to LED lighting brings a different set of challenges which FCT has embraced as an opportunity continue to push the bounds of what can be done at the Theater on the Green. With the transition from Incandescent to LED fixtures, the number of controls for a fixture has gone from a single Intensity control to also include controls for Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Lime, White, Ultraviolet, Strobe, and Zoom. FCT has met this challenge by also transitioning to computer-controlled lighting. Multiple fixture settings are stored as queues within a computer program which can be scripted with every phrase of a scene and measure of a musical.

As FCT enters the 2019-2020 season with Seussical, Lost in Yonkers, Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Night Must Fall, Rabbit Hole, Jesus Christ Super Star, and Frozen Jr., additional improvements are on the horizon to make every visit to the theater an experience you will want to repeat and share. From the opening act to the closing bows, the real magic of theater is the memory you take home with you after the show.
