AgriSafe in Action: January 2020
AgriSafe and 8 Partners awarded USDA-
Farm Stress Assistance Grant
The AgriSafe Network is honored to lead a coalition of eight partner organizations from the southern states to respond to farmers, farmworkers and ranchers under stress.   The Farmers First Act in the 2018 Farm Bill is a focused effort aimed at improving the lives of farmers who work hard to feed the world. Stressors in agriculture vary and the resources to assist in stress reduction should be innovative yet flexible at the state and local level. Organizations wishing to partner with this new network are encouraged to contact Natalie Roy directly at nroy@agrisafe.org

Disaster Preparedness- 30 Minute Warning
What if 30 minutes was the amount of time you had to gather belongings and flee to a shelter due to a predicted disaster i.e. flood, fire, hurricane or tornado?

Natural disasters are becoming increasingly prominent and the many catastrophic events of 2019 have given many a wake up call for change. Prepare now to safely survive and recover. Weaving a tight safety net for disaster victims is part of the protection plan. Customizable emergency preparedness plans are available for free through many colleges of public health.

The Department of Homeland Security offers community resources and planning at www.ready.gov . Check out these AgriSafe's resources on winter flood and wildfire emergency preparedness.
January Health Spotlight: Winter Fitness
Agricultural work is a physically demanding way of life and it is important for farmers to maintain their health year round. Frigid temperatures often cause a decline in physical activity levels, as individuals tend to remain indoors. The body is the most important piece of equipment on the farm, and exercising during winter months is essential for sustaining a healthy body and mind.
Health Tip : Dress in layers when exercising outdoors during winter months. This way you can remove layers as you start to sweat and then put them back on as needed.
  • First, put on a thin layer of synthetic material (such as polypropylene) which draws sweat away from your body. Avoid cotton, which stays wet next to your skin.
  • Next, add a layer of fleece or wool for insulation. Top this with a waterproof, breathable outer layer.
  • Consider buying exercise shoes a half size or one size larger than usual to allow for thick thermal socks or an extra pair of regular socks.
