Putting down deep roots to grow beautiful fruit……

The storyline in my classroom is “From Deep Roots Grow Beautiful Fruit". My deep hope is that my students would put down deep roots to understand who God is, build a relationship with Him, and bear beautiful fruit.

Our journey begins with first graders exploring the many ways they can grow “deep roots” in their faith. To help the students have a better understanding of “deep roots”, we discussed how important roots are to trees.  We went outside so the students could actually explore the roots of the trees outside our classroom. Students then drew pictures of trees with root systems. I asked the students what kinds of roots they thought would be important for them to grow in Jesus. The first ideas they suggested were reading The Bible and praying to God. My heart just melted. Beginning with these two “deep roots” at the beginning of the year will help them during stressful times like we are in now and strengthen their personal relationship with Christ.  These were added as roots to our tree.  As we have different experiences as a class, we will add more roots to our board. And, as the students learn to live as deeply rooted disciples, they will begin practicing growing beautiful fruit. They reflect and celebrate their growing roots and fruit by adding to the storyline.  (continues next column)
I love how the theme of our school this year, “Abide and Fruitful” complements the storyline in my classroom. We all have to grow “deep roots” to be fruitful, and this will only happen if we abide in Christ as stated in John 15:4 (ESV).

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me."

God bless you as you abide in Him and bear fruit.

Recess Corner
It is a gift for our students to be able to play and have fun outside with their classmates! It also serves as a wonderful opportunity to take a mask break. The students have been so flexible as we have worked to have recess be fun and safe for all. There have been a few changes and updates to what recess looks like as we navigate the changes with COVID and being in-person. Our staff and Mrs. Britton have and will continue to go into classrooms and remind all students about our Campus Expectations and also give some ‘during-COVID-examples’ to help students understand the expectations and why they are in place:

  • Be Kind – Respect staff if they need to remind you to follow social distance guidelines at recess
  • Be Safe – Wear your mask when asked and keep arms-length away from others
  • Use Self-Control with Words and Body – No contact with anyone, at any time. Remember – integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking.
  • Be an Encourager – Set an good example for others by following the guidelines and expectations, encouraging others to do the same.

For now, there are no competitive sports like soccer, football, and basketball games. It is too difficult to follow the no-contact guideline. (This might be different in P.E. class when it is only one group of students with the teacher fully watching and supervising the group at all times.)

  • No personal equipment or trading cards out at recess (Remember, we aren’t sharing resources, if at all possible.)
  • Masks must be on in the covered spaces as it is just too difficult to be socially distanced.
  • Again, P.E. is different than recess. You may be allowed to do things in PE that you are not able to do at recess as it is a smaller, controlled group.

Now let's focus on the things we CAN do at recess.
The list is growing of what students CAN do and partially includes:

  • Pass, kick, throw to each other - without physical contact
  • Four Square
  • Dodgeball
  • Bump/Shooting baskets
  • Frisbee Golf
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Foosball Soccer – Rules and Guidelines are Coming out Soon!
  • Wallball
  • Badminton – Coming Soon!
  • All play and climbing structures are open
  • Buckets and Shovels
  • Jump Ropes, Hula Hoops

Our entire EA staff is working hard to support the kiddos in making good and safe decisions while out at play and having consistency as they do. They use teachable moments as they offer this support. The students know and understand that if multiple reminders need to be given when choices don’t align with our Campus Expectations, a yellow Behavior Report will go home to parents. This report is a resource used to communicate with parents, as well serves as a way to have parents support us in helping the student(s) understand how important it is to follow all safety guidelines and our Campus Expectations. If a Behavior Report does go home, parents are asked to sign it and have the student return it to their teacher the next day.

New! Extra positive reinforcement is being used at recesses: “You Have Been Spotted!" cards are being handed out when our Recess EA’s observe students making outstanding choices. If/when a card is presented to a student, a fun treat goes home, too.

Thank you, Parents, for your support as we create fun and safe recesses at Three Points this year. Please pray with us. Pray for safety in the recess space, for clear communications, and for opportunities to help the students build relationships while enjoying the company of their classmates. We will continue to create and communicate ways all students can enjoy recess during these unusual times.

Preschool News
This week, Mrs. Koorn’s Little Explorers learned what it means to be a scientist!

Preschoolers practiced science vocabulary as they conducted several experiments with apples. They wondered how many apples could be balanced on their heads. They pondered whether apples sink or float in water, then graphed their hypotheses. Fun experiments followed!

These little scientists continue to wonder, explore, and discover with gusto and joy!
