Lesson Module 3 - Geography
Geography
One of the silver linings of AusPREP Online is the flexibility to include lessons that are not part of the standard AusPREP curriculum. We are excited to bring this Geography lesson module to you this week. The first three lessons have been available for the past two weeks, and we bring you the final two lessons and instructor office hours this week.

The study of World Geography focuses on the relationships between the vast multitudes of people, places, and environments across the earth. The best part about geography is it helps students gain a better understanding of their world. The geography module is an introduction to geography with a STEM focus. Students will take geography in 9th grade, so this is a great opportunity to check out some of the tools, especially ArcGIS, that students will use in upcoming years.

Meet the Instructor
Bryant Deane  has been teaching for 10 years, and is currently at Anderson High School. He is the instructional coach for the social studies department, and has taught world geography for 5 years as well as several other courses. In addition to teaching, he is also the varsity soccer coach at Anderson.

Mr. Deane loves making social studies come alive for his students. Finding connections with the past and present helps students gain a deeper understanding of their lives and the world around them. He also strives to teach empathy and a greater understanding of world cultures through geography.
Featured Resources
In addition to AusPREP Online, we are happy to connect participants to high-quality resources available from outside sources that will extend learning and enrichment. The links will also be accessible via the AusPREP homepage and here .

Families In Nature Ecologist School - This informal science education program allows people to earn badges in 16 branches of science by learning in nature together. The lessons in the guidebook are intended for all ages all together and most can be done in your own backyard, or even in your house, with minimal materials. Over the next few months, they will be posting 6 lessons per week from their Ecologist School Guidebook

Partners for Education, Agriculture, and Sustainability Distance Learning - Keep Your Children/Students actively engaged in outdoor & edible education with these great resources for exploring nature in your neighborhood/backyard, gardening, and cooking. Austin-area students can answer video inquiry questions and be entered into a drawing for fun summer fun prizes

California Education and the Environment Initiative K-12 Curriculum - This curriculum uses the environment as a context to help students learn science and history-social science. It is a model to demonstrate how to integrate environmental literacy into instruction. Teachers may access all of the EEI Curriculum online for free, and until the end of this school year students may access form-fillable workbooks and other materials directly from their website. For this week, we recommend exploration of the History-Social Science Units. The environment can provide depth to the study of history-social science, including the influence of geography on human settlements, the availability and conservation of natural resources, and the location of trade routes.

National Geographic Resource Library/The Real Time Curriculum Project - Created by a National Geographic Fellow, the Real Time Curriculum Project is comprised of a series of "minute projects", each focused on a relevant current event. Minute Project #1 is focused on the COVID-19 / coronavirus pandemic. Check in daily and follow along @LearnMinute as they connect you to content to engage & empower educators AND students.

Cincinnati Zoo Home Safari Videos - Join the Cincinnati Zoo for a Home Safari Facebook Live each Tuesday & Thursday at 3pm EDT where they will highlight one of their amazing animals and include an activity you can do from home. All videos are posted from their webpage and on their YouTube channel shortly after the Facebook Live ends.
