MENTAL HEALTH - HEALTHY STRESS
In our monthly focus of the importance of understanding mental health, we have asked one of our pastors/Christian counselors among us to provide us with some GREAT insights about healthy stress. You will find it below.

"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." (Jeremiah 1:5)

God doesn't make mistakes. He created you with intention and purpose.  If you find yourself in a bad place in life, you don't have to stay there. This is not who you are at your core - you can change. You can find yourself - your sweet spot again. On a daily basis, we are bombarded with news about the dangers of stress. When we read about the negative health effects of  toxic stress, we certainly can get stressed-out about being stressed-out. It's like when we read about the dangers of not sleeping and how bad it is for us - and then we cannot sleep because we are worrying about not sleeping. Often, there is so much emphasis on what is bad for us and what can go wrong that we forget to focus on what is good for us and what can go right (Philippians 4:8).

The good news is that you  can choose how you view stress. You can learn how to not let stress defeat you! You can develop a mind shift and embrace stress, healthy stress. Consider these activation tips for Healthy Stress (adapted from Dr. Caroline Leaf,  Switch on Your Brain).

1. See stress as something that enhances, rather than diminishes, your performance. Visualize those blood vessels around your heart dilating and pumping blood and oxygen into your brain. Visualize neurotransmitters being released and see it all working together to help you focus and think with clarity to react in the best way (Romans 4:17).

2. See the situation you are facing as something you and Jesus can handle versus something you can't handle; make stress work for you instead of against you (Philippians 4:13).

3. Each time you feel yourself on the brink of toxic stress, speak with a friend, confidant, or trusted family member (in-person or phone call) to help you get perspective. And remind yourself that with Jesus, you can handle this.

4. Perhaps write down the benefits of a healthy reaction to stress and keep it on you, reading it when you feel challenged. Remember, God has given you a powerful and peace-filled mind (Isaiah 26:3).

5. Accepting stressful situations and their outcome can make future situations easier to manage. It's the idea behind Navy SEAL training - "Repeated exposure to stressful events gives [SEALs] the chance to develop both a physical and psychological sense of control, so when they're in actual combat they don't just shut down" ( James 1:3-4).

6. When you face a challenge, tell yourself how good stress can be for you. Think of the positive benefits that good stress can have on your body. Tell yourself that you will have more clarity of thought if you are filled with faith and make stress work for you (1 John 5:4). Be encouraged! (Joshua 1:8-9)

Thanks for reading, for praying and for serving. "In our prayers, we always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel...we are confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion..." ( Philippians 1:3-6). You are loved. You are prayed for. In our Mission Area gatherings,  we look forward to seeing you soon!

SUPERSTART!

CCD will be taking a group from our district to SuperStart!, an event hosted by an organization called Christ in Youth. SuperStart! is geared toward  preteen students  and features high energy worship, age-appropriate lessons, opportunities for small group activities, and fantastic real-life application for preteens to grow in their walk with Christ. This year, we are opening this up to students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades.

SuperStart! will be held in Naperville on  March 20-21 . The main sessions will be at the Yellow Box Church, then our group will head to Naperville Trinity Church of the Nazarene for games, meals and lodging. The cost for the event is $50 for students and $35 for chaperones.

Our deadline to register is February 9th. We would love for you to bring a group of preteens from your church! Please spread the word  to the families of preteens in your congregation. Please email Anne Whalen if you have any preteens from your church who would like to attend!
