A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
As we start 2020, I thank San Leandro voters for their ongoing support for our award-winning district. In 2016, Measure J1 provided $104 million to address critical facility priorities across our schools. Specifically, we have been able to complete the following:
- Installed heating and ventilation (HVAC) systems districtwide
- Renovated all elementary and middle school libraries
- Repaired leaky roofs, faulty plumbing, and electrical systems
- Updated security lighting and emergency systems
- Replaced deteriorating portables with new permanent, modular buildings
- Installed hydration stations at all secondary schools
As proud as we are of this work, our facilities assessment in 2016 identified
nearly $300 million worth of need
across our schools. Since the state will not provide any funds for these projects without a local match, we again turn to the community to support our schools. We want to complete the urgent work identified in our strategic facilities plan. In the Bay Area, construction costs continue to rise. With that in mind, the longer we wait, the more we will pay for the facilities we already know our students and families need.
Please watch for ways you can support our efforts in the next few months. The awards our students and staff continue to win have only come through our strong, collaborative partnership. For that, I am deeply grateful.
Best wishes for 2020,
Dr. Michael McLaughlin, Superintendent

SLUSD MAKES GAINS
Some impressive highlights include:
- The SLUSD college & career readiness indicator increased by 8.8%. Students with disabilities made the most significant improvements, with an 18.3% increase.
- Both Math and ELA performance results improved one full performance level, from Orange to Yellow.
- Increased performance results for students with disabilities and homeless youth moved SLUSD out of state-mandated differentiated assistance for these student subgroups.

TAKE OUR SURVEY!
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is an annual anonymous, confidential survey that
helps analyze youth health, school connectedness, and student safety.
All 5th to 11th-grade students, as well as all SLUSD families and staff will be asked to take the survey, which will be on your school’s website starting January 27 until February 14. The results of this survey supports our efforts to build schools that are drug-free, safe, and supportive environments.
Parental consent is required for 5th and 6th graders. Watch for a permission slip coming via ParentSquare for your 5th or 6th grader and make sure it is returned so we can hear about their experiences.
