What does Suicide Prevention "really" look like?

Our Outreach Coordinator, Jenny Lynne Stroup, shares what made a difference for her family and how you can be there for those in your life in her column featured in San Diego Veterans Magazine Page 28-29.
As the pandemic continues to challenge us, using good mental health practices are imperative. Our Outreach Coordinator and military spouse, Jenny Lynne Stroup, shares some helpful tips and strategies in her latest column featured on pages 30 to 31 in Homeland Magazine.
Celebrating our first year anniversary
Our clinic director was interviewed by FOX Channel 5 News to mark our clinic's one-year anniversary and a full year of serving local post 9/11 veterans and military families.

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Veterans Village of San Diego set out a year ago to provide much-needed, comprehensive mental health care services to the more than 225,000 veterans in San Diego County, as well as military families.

Since our grand opening, the Cohen Clinic at VVSD has provided mental health services to hundreds of clients, treating conditions such as post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, transition issues, and children’s behavioral issues.

More than half of our clients served have been veterans with female veterans making up roughly 34% of this group-- more than double the female veteran population in the United States.

Military family members of veterans or service members make up 36% of all clients served. Services are available regardless of discharge status, role while in uniform or combat experience.

From our clinic to you and your family, thank you for making our first year a great one!
Halloween in a pandemic
Halloween is right around the corner!

While the pandemic has put a damper on many of the things we enjoy doing this time of year, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the Fall season. It may look a little different this year with Covid-19, but that doesn’t mean you and your loved ones cant have a fun and safe Halloween.

While traditional practices present higher risks than others we wanted to offer a few ways that your family can rethink and reimagine things like trick-or-treating with these creative ideas to keep the COVID-19 boogeyman away!

  • Drive-through events. Attend a drive-through Halloween event or car parade.
  • Movie night! Watch a spooky movie with your household members, either at home or at a drive-in theater.
  • Jack-o-Laterns. Carve pumpkins with members of your own household.
  • Go all out on Halloween decorations. Fake cobwebs, a fog machine, strings of lights and eerie music...now is a great time to really let your inner child shine and create a fun holiday environment the kids (and adults) in your community.
  • Just say NO to grab bowls. Instead, consider creating individually-wrapped candy grab bags and arrange them on a table outside your house for trick-or-treaters to quickly pick up. You can also dangle those grab bags from a tree in your yard to make it a little more interactive.
  • "Boo" your neighbors. Surprise your neighbors with a sweet treat by leaving it on their doorstep. For fun ideas, visit beenbooed.com for additional details.

Continuing the fight
September may be in our rearview mirror, but suicide prevention is an ongoing effort, and we all have a role to play.

Though Suicide Prevention Month has come to a close, our team at The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Veterans Village of San Diego will continue to do our part by treating our post 9/11 veterans and military family members and providing support for those who are struggling, especially during the pandemic.
