August 16th Worship Service
Romans 8:31-39. We all face obstacles and adversity in life. There are times that we may feel overwhelmed at the hardships we face, but Romans 8 reminds us that our almighty God is for us. In some of the most beautiful words in the entire Bible, Paul asserts that there is nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Outdoor Worship Services August 16 & 23
OBPC will once again host two outdoor worship services on Sunday, August 16th and Sunday, August 23rd - both services at 6 pm. They will be held on the grassy lawn on the east side of the building. If you would prefer to attend the service and remain in your car this will be possible. There will be parking attendants in bright neon vests directing you where to park on the grass. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience in-person worship and still maintain safe, social practices.
Attendance is not limited, but we ask that you pre-register so that we will have a means for contact tracing should the need arise. To pre-register, click on this link: Register Now . You will see two options for each service--either lawn seating or drive-in. Click on the appropriate box for the service(s) you plan to attend and fill out the form. If you have trouble registering online, please contact the office.
We will practice social distancing and face masks will be required. If you do not have a face mask, one will be provided. If you have a lawn chair and can bring it, that will be helpful. You will be instructed as to where to place your lawn chairs in order to maintain social distancing. The church building will be open for restroom use only through the door on the east side. Please click here for complete information about these services.

A Message About Live Streaming
The Worship Committee is aware of the poor quality of recent live streamed Sunday worship services. We are as disappointed and discouraged as you are and we are working hard to pinpoint the problems. It seems just as we get one glitch fixed something else goes wrong. It's hard to be patient when we recognize what a vital link this programming is to our church. We so appreciate your prayers and understanding.

This Week's Devotional
While Pastor Jody is on vacation this week the Worship Committee shares this devotion from The Rev. Shari Murphy:
“There’s bound to come some trouble to your life …” We’ve heard. We knew it. Yet, we hoped and prayed it wouldn’t come. We secretly hoped that it wouldn’t be us that it came to.
And yet, it is. We can’t escape it. At least not as long as our feet walk this earth. These words come from a song from my youth written by Rich Mullins. In my youth, I had no idea what it really meant. I hadn’t experienced pain. I hadn’t lost a job. I hadn’t wept with friends weeping from loss greater than I could ever imagine.
But now, I’ve experienced those things. And what have I learned? I’ve learned that the song was right. “There is bound to come some trouble to your life.” The question in my mind is always: what do I do when—not if—trouble comes? How will I handle it? Can I handle it? Will it overtake me? Will it be more than I can bear?
Many times in my life, trouble has come. And many times, I thought it might be the end of me. And yet, this still, small voice whispered to me every time: “You don’t have to fear this. I’m here. I’m walking with you. I’m here to comfort you and bring you peace.”
And guess what? That voice was right. That voice was the triune God speaking to my heart the words from Psalm 23:4:
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
“Even though …” Even though trouble comes my way, he is there with me. Even though I am walking through the darkest valley, he is there with me. He is there so I don’t have to fear. I have his protection and his comfort.
Do you know how that Rich Mullins’ song ends? It says:
“Reach out to Jesus, hold on tight.
He’s been there before and He knows what it’s like.
You’ll find He’s there.”
You’ll find he’s there. Sometimes, we forget to look up from our struggles to even see him. But he’s there. Waiting. Waiting with open arms.
PRAYER:
Father, even though I don’t always understand the trouble that comes my way, I trust in you. I give my life to you. I know you are with me when I am scared, hurting, sad, and happy. Please, just wrap your arms around me. Please remind me of your comfort, so I can experience the peace that only comes from knowing you. Amen.

Nominations for Elder Class of 2023
The Nominating Committee is beginning to work on selecting 3 persons to serve as Elders for the class of 2023. An elder should be a person who is committed to their faith in Jesus Christ, is a dedicated member of Outer Banks Presbyterian Church, and works well with a team as we seek to serve the Lord. The Nominating Committee would like the help of the congregation. Ordinarily, we have placed a ballot box in the gathering space for you to indicate your suggestions. This is not possible while the building is closed, so we encourage anyone with nominations to contact directly the two elder representatives on the Nominating Committee, Bobby Gentry and Bob Messinger. You may contact Bobby G. at 757-718-8353 or bobbygentryobx@gmail.com and Bob M. at 252-305-9388 or bobnance55@gmail.com. You may also contact any of the other members of the Nominating Committee, who are: Melanie Cahoon, Bev Jones, Winkey Roberts, and John Webb. Thank you for your thoughtful considerations!

Support Room In The Inn
Charitocracy is a community giving project in which non-profits compete to receive the monthly pot. OBX Room In The Inn is one of the nominees for August and if it wins will receive over $1300. Please consider joining this wonderful on-line charity and then vote for Room In The Inn. It only costs $12.00 a year. You can give more, but $12.00 is all they ask. Invite your friends to join too! Go to charitocracy.org. Thanks so much. If we all do a little to support our neighbors in need, it can add up to so much!

New Hope Presbytery Forum on Racial Equality
In a continuing effort to address the issue of racial equality, New Hope Presbytery congregations are invited to participate in the event, “Brave Spaces and Truth-Telling,” a series of conversations and activities designed to acknowledge and examine structural racism in our churches and to create new paradigms for a more just and unbiased Christian experience for all worshipers.
This effort expands our Matthew 25 work by bringing the focus inside our own churches and our own hearts. It is evident that each of us must face the scourge of structural, systemic racism and our own contributions to it.
Please join our first forum: Is this Conversation Really Necessary? led by Dr. Brian K. Blount. The forum will be conducted as a Zoom meeting on August 18, 2:00 p.m. –
There will be additional forums that follow approximately every 2 months as well as learning activities between meetings.
About Dr. Brian K. Blount:
Brian K. Blount is the president and professor of New Testament in the Walter W. Moore and Charles E.S. Kraemer presidential chairs at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Richmond, VA, and Charlotte, NC. He was called to this position in 2007 after serving for 15 years as the Richard J. Dearborn professor of New Testament interpretation at Princeton Theological Seminary.
