Bascom Palmer Opens Lois Pope Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration Research
With the cutting of a broad ribbon, a new era of breakthrough research and clinical treatment became a reality at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute's brand-new Lois Pope Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration Research, a 21,000-square-foot facility dedicated to ending blinding retinal diseases.

Held January 15, the ribbon-cutting declared the Center - a beacon of hope for many - open for business, one year after the ceremonial "wall-breaking" when construction began.

Philanthropist Lois Pope, who donated a historic $12 million to the effort, cut the ribbon with a flourish, ushering in an extraordinary opportunity to find new treatments and cures for eye disease. Mrs. Pope announced the gift, the largest in Bascom Palmer's history, in March 2019 in honor of her beloved mother, Anastasia Berrodin, who lost her sight from macular degeneration. She told family, friends and the University of Miami leadership gathered for the event that it was her mother's memory that spurred her to action.

The Campbell Foundation Awards Grant to Researcher Seeking to Develop HIV/AIDS Vaccine
The Campbell Foundation, a Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit which provides grants to support alternative clinical approaches to the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, has awarded its first grant of the year to a Tel Aviv University researcher whose goal is to develop a vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS.

The $80,000 research grant will allow Natalia Freund, PhD to continue her work in which she, and her highly respected team, have isolated a broadly neutralizing antibody (bNab) called BG18. It has been found that a small fraction of those infected by HIV-1 develop these bNAbs that, when passively transferred to mice or macaques, can treat or prevent infection. BG18 has been shown to be extremely effective in reducing HIV-1 viral loads in HIV-1 infected humanized mice.

Freund, who heads the Laboratory for Human Antibody Responses at The Department of Microbiology and Clinical Immunology at Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, and her team, are hoping to use BG18 as a template for the development of a vaccine that would prevent HIV-1.
Christine E. Lynn Women's Health & Wellness Institute Adds Cardiologist Heather Johnson, MD 
The BocaCare Physician Network, a network of primary care doctors and specialists who provide high-quality medical care to patients of all ages, has added preventive cardiologist Heather Johnson, MD, to the medical staff of Boca Raton Regional Hospital's Christine E. Lynn Women's Health & Wellness Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida. She specializes in cardiovascular medicine, preventive cardiology, hypertension management and vascular health.

Under Dr. Johnson's leadership, the preventive cardiology program at the Institute's Blechman Center for Specialty Care and Preventive Cardiology will be further developed. Services offered at this center of excellence include screening, diagnostic evaluation, treatment and referrals for intervention as needed.
