As stewards of the public's trust, Michigan's 15 public universities are bringing their full slate of resources to bear in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, marshaling medical and health care assets, research, facilities, protective gear and equipment, and a vast range of expertise spanning the disciplines. Outreach and collaboration are central themes in the universities' efforts to address this public health crisis.
 
Each week, we will share a sample of new programs and actions the state universities are taking in their efforts to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and that demonstrate the vital missions of Michigan's public universities.
Central Michigan University
Dr. Furhut Janssen, director of Central Michigan University College of Medicine's psychiatry residency program, joined a national physician support line to support physicians who are feeling overwhelmed and fearful after treating patients during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ypsilanti residents can now receive a cloth face mask, hand sanitizer and more as part of a COVID-19 assistance care package program that was recently launched. The masks were produced at Eastern Michigan University through Engage EMU.

Former two-sport athlete at Grand Valley State University and current nurse, Briauna Taylor, has been working on the front lines in several Michigan hospitals amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Lake Superior State University's nursing department collaborated with the Superior Simulation Center, War Memorial Hospital and the United States Army Corps of Engineers-Detroit to create Acute Container Care Pods for hospitals in need of additional ICU hospital beds with ventilator support needs.

Northern Michigan University recently donated 24 refurbished notebook computers to Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette - which has recorded the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in the Upper Peninsula - and to residents who have been isolated in their rooms since mid-March.

Oakland University is asking for the local community to help fill its archives in Kresge Library. The university is trying to form a record of people's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic with photos, screenshots, videos, art, diary entries and materials.

The Saginaw Art Museum and the Saginaw Valley State University Center for Community Writing have created The Quarantine Chronicles. The website features a broad range of pandemic-inspired work from artists throughout the region.

University of Michigan faculty, staff, alumni and students have developed online tools designed to help local and state officials reopen the economy safely and gradually while allowing them to quickly identify and respond to potential COVID-19 hot spots and outbreaks.

Western Michigan University's Sindecuse Health Center has become one of the few sites in Kalamazoo County to offer rapid-result antigen testing that detects active COVID-19 cases. The testing option was implemented to help safeguard the greater Kalamazoo community, and assist the institution with campus return plans.
