The Food Bank provides food assistance to more than 400 individuals and families each week who live at or below the 130% federal poverty guidelines and have found themselves in need within our community.
You can support the Food Bank by donating to or shopping at their Resale Shop at 830 N. Columbia Street.
Selective on what they present, this is not your typical thrift shop.
PD Wins City Department Food Drive Competition!

Police, Fire, Admin and Public Works recently organized and competed for a coveted tin can trophy. All told, these departments collected and donated over FOUR TONS of food (enough for 300 families for one month).

We (the community) are always proud of these folks.

Today, we're just a little prouder.
Another One (gun) Bites the Dust
One of the top priorities of the Covington Police Department is the removal of illegal weapons from our streets. I am happy to report that since Chief Mike Ferrell took charge in July, we have removed ELEVEN guns from the streets.

Big Thanks to the men and women of Covington that wear the blue.
Disposal of Unused Medications

With the holidays often comes the young ones visiting grandma's house. It's time to make sure medications are properly stored, hidden away and out of reach. Unneeded meds may be safely disposed of in the lobby of the Police Department Annex (adjacent to the Council Chambers at 222 E. Kirkland Street).
To open front door of the lobby, push knob on door handle.

Leadership St. Tammany Christmas Visit
Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center
Each Christmas Eve morning graduates from Leadership St. Tammany visit the Florida Parish Juvenile Detention Center. They spend time with the detainees, share some Christmas spirit, maybe sing together and give stocking gifts to the children. They assure the kids that they are not forgotten ... and give each child a stocking of approved gifts.
For some children it's the most they have ever received at Christmas time. For all of them it is the only Christmas this year. Due to Ida, supplies for the stockings were lost. If you're so inclined, a donation of $25.00 covers the cost of a stocking. It's a good thing.
Litter. It's a bad thing.
Our Public Works department is doing a clean-sweep of the City. It's sad that in one day they collected 70 bags of litter.

I hate litter. And, I hate the fact that we spend taxpayer dollars picking it up. We, the City, do not have the resources nor the manpower to continuously pick up the amount of trash people toss onto our streets.

Kudos to the men who keep our streets and ditches clean. Shame on the people who trash them.
When we lost Marsolan's,
We Lost a Piece of our Soul
Last week, with the burning of Marsolan's, Covington endured a terrible loss. It should be noted that our little downtown is not simply a collection of buildings, but more importantly, it’s a collection of families and family businesses that have plied their goods and wares in our city continuously, some since the 19th century, many others throughout the 20th and 21st centuries:
The Burns, the Blossmans, Casertas and Comenges,
the Fredericks, Hendrys, and Kentzels, Pooles, Rosses, Morses,
the Lyons, Planches, Schoens, Smiths … and the Marsolan family.
It’s these families and their family businesses that have helped make Covington the special place it is.

With the loss of Marsolan’s … it feels as if we lost a little piece of our soul. I have reached out to Harvey and let him know that whatever direction he and the family choose to take, the city and the community will be there to support them. Regarding Harvey, he is the Farmer's Almanac of Covington, omniscient in all things feed, seed, livestock and agriculture. Harvey's answers to our questions are and were have been our Google before Google was Google.

I, too, would like to commend our fire department and those from the surrounding areas for their great work keeping the fire contained. Also, Public Works, our Police Department and CLECO were all on hand to assist in their various capacities.
We, the City, are grateful to all.
