Mobile Clinics
in Global Use

In the early 2000s, when I first became engaged with mobile healthcare, it was generally projected there were nearly 2000 mobile health outreach programs across the U.S. In the time since, new mobile programs continue to be launched in both urban and rural areas of the country, providing primary and preventive care for underserved populations. And today, there are mobile clinics with a wide range of specialty services such as: dentistry, audio testing, eyecare, mammography, behavioral health, HIV/AIDS testing, immunization, prenatal/post-natal care, and general health education.

It's the application of mobile clinics globally for humanitarian response that speaks to the essential value of these clinics on wheels. Communities in many corners of the world are being innovative in adopting the mobile clinic model for serving hard-to-reach populations. Consider three organizations referenced in this newsletter: Baby & Mom Mobile Clinic (West Africa), Compassion for Haiti, and Australian Government Department of Health & Human Services. Please review their websites to learn more about these vital mobile outreach programs.

Sincerely,

Humanitarian Care in the News

Australian Government Department of Health & Human Services: "Our staff travel in Mobile Services Centres to rural and regional areas offering residents a wide range of services to meet their changing healthcare needs."

Baby & Mom Mobile Clinics: "BAM, founded in Ghana West Africa, addresses     reproductive, infant and child health needs in underserved communities around the world. Our mobile clinics travel to remote areas, providing free prenatal and postnatal care, pediatric care including immunizations, and gynecology services. BAM also gives women a safe place to deliver their babies to avoid dangerous home births and provides education and resources to maintain a healthy life"

Compassion for Haiti: "Our U.S. supporters provide planning, building, and maintaining of agronomy projects in the Southwestern part of Haiti. They are helping change the lives of extremely poor farmers by delivering goods (plants, animals, seeds) and services (education, training, market access) to help under-served people lift themselves and their communities out of desperate situations. They've trained young people to receive and care for over 500 goats in the Kids for Kidz program." Says Sue & Tim Kitch ( ADI Mobile), " we are very eager to return soon to Haiti to assess the needs of our brothers and sisters".

Lava Mae X : "We're teaching the world how to take critical services for our
un-housed neighbors to the street by providing free toolkits, mentorship, and training to communities that want to launch Lava Mae X-designed programs such as mobile hygiene."

Buying a Mobile Clinic: Three Options

Your organization has decided to launch a mobile healthcare (medical or dental) outreach program to serve local and/or statewide communities. A grant application is due, or you've already been awarded funding. In purchasing a mobile unit, following are three basic options to consider:

#1. Contract with a manufacturer to  build an all-brand new mobile clinic   ... with a new chassis and new interior customized to your clinic floor plan requirements. Generally, this option takes 6-9 months. Average quotes can range $250-350K depending on required equipment (medical or dental), size of vehicle, gas or diesel engine, and added features such as bathroom, WCL, or slide-outs.

#2. Contract with a manufacturer to  build a hybrid mobile clinic   ... converting a used chassis (of recent vintage and low mileage) and building a new interior customized to your clinic floor plan requirements. This option generally takes 3-4 months. Average quotes can range $160-225K depending on the available chassis (gas or diesel), extent of interior modifications, required equipment (medical or dental), and added features such as bathroom, WCL, or slide-outs.

#3. Purchase a pre-owned/used mobile clinic   (medical, dental, or specialty care) being sold by a healthcare organization, health corporation, or private practice. Available immediately, pending mechanical and equipment inspections. Average costs can range $75-125K depending on vehicle age, mileage, and overall condition of the vehicle and equipment.
