Androscoggin Lake Algal Bloom Updates

30 Mile has been working closely with the Androscoggin Lake Improvement Corporation and the Maine DEP to monitor algal bloom conditions and identify next steps.

2021 Courtesy Boat Inspection Program
Bigger Than Ever
This year our Courtesy Boat Inspection (CBI) Program was our biggest ever! Beginning Memorial Day weekend and going through the end of September, we nearly doubled our hours of staffing this year to 2,189. Our 10 paid staff and 11 volunteers conducted 2,814 inspections on four lakes and ponds. Although they did find many hitchhiking plants on boats entering and exiting our lakes, none of the plants were invasive.

This year's team of volunteers was our largest yet. They made a big impact keeping our lakes safe from invasive species, allowing us to expand our coverage an extra 244 hours. Thank you volunteers!

LakeSmart 2021 Recap
30 Mile is a regional LakeSmart “HUB” support center, helping our lake associations deliver LakeSmart education property-by-property and shore-by-shore to create a conservation ethic across the lake community. This year our LakeSmart teams completed more than twenty evaluations, with four of the evaluated properties receiving LakeSmart awards.

Becoming LakeSmart is one of the best things you can do to protect your lake. To request a FREE evaluation by your local LakeSmart team, visit our website.
LakeSmart would not be possible without our partner lake associations and the volunteer coordinators and evaluators doing this work:

Flying Pond: Cindy Ripley (coordinator), Diane Araps, and Steve Trehu

Androsocggin Lake: Buddy Cummings (coordinator), Patt Koscinski, Cynthia Giguere-Unrein, Molly Saunders, Margaret Lane, and Allen Unrein

Parker & David Ponds: Deb Cayer (coordinator) and Susan & Gerry Tinguely

Water Quality Monitoring Season Wraps Up
30 Mile staff, alongside our many dedicated volunteers, monitored water quality in eight lakes on a bi-weekly rotation May through October – completing nearly 100 sampling events this year! We are now in the midst of data entry and analysis, and will be compiling our findings into the 2021 Annual Water Quality Monitoring Reports over the winter months. In the meantime, be sure to check out the dissolved oxygen/temperature profiles and clarity readings we collected this season by visiting our website.
