Dear St. James Community,

Attached is the bulletin for tomorrow's outdoor service at All Saints', West Newbury.
Feel free t o follow along on your phone or tablet, or print out a copy to bring. Or simply listen to the words - no bulletin is required for worship.

As a reminder:

Everyone is invited to All Saints' Episcopal Church, 895 Main Street, West Newbury, for an outside service beginning at 10am to celebrate our Patron, Saint James.

We will celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, hear some of the history of Saint James, and close with The Lord's Prayer.

Masks must be worn, and physical distancing of at least 6ft from each other must be observed (families may sit together). We invite you to bring chairs (some chairs will be provided), water, hats, and enjoy the sunshine. We will NOT be able to provide hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes, so please bring those if you wish.

We ask, in keeping with our Diocesan guidelines, that interaction is not engaged in before or after the service, beyond waving and giving the sign of peace, and that once the service is concluded we return to our cars. There will be no Coffee Hour on Sunday, either virtually or in-person.

The weather is looking good right now, but if that changes we will send a cancellation e-mail, and worship will be virtual. Either way, the service will be recorded and posted to Facebook and our website later in the day.

Saint's Day blessings!

Peace,
The Solemnity of St. James, The Apostle
The Liturgy of the Word
July 26, 2020

Opening Hymn 488 Be thou my vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
all else be nought to me, save that thou art -
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
thou my great Father; thine own may I be;
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

High King of heaven, when victory is won,
may I reach heaven's joys, bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Officiant: Blessed be God, Father Son and Holy Spirit.
People: And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
Officiant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Trisagion
(said three times)
Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy upon us.

The Collect
Officiant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Officiant: Let us pray.
Officiant: O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

Reader: A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 45:1-5
The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, “Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.” Thus you shall say to him, “Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted—that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all
flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go.”
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 7:1-10 Domine, Deus meus
1 O Lord my God, I take refuge in you; *
save and deliver me from all who pursue me;
2 Lest like a lion they tear me in pieces *
and snatch me away with none to deliver me.
3 O Lord my God, if I have done these things: *
if there is any wickedness in my hands,
4 If I have repaid my friend with evil, *
or plundered him who without cause is my enemy;
5 Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, *
trample my life into the ground,
and lay my honor in the dust.
6 Stand up, O Lord, in your wrath; *
rise up against the fury of my enemies.
7 Awake, O my God, decree justice; *
let the assembly of the peoples gather round you.
8 Be seated on your lofty throne, O Most High; *
O Lord, judge the nations.
9 Give judgment for me according to my righteousness, O Lord, *
and according to my innocence, O Most High.
10 Let the malice of the wicked come to an end,
but establish the righteous; *
for you test the mind and heart, O righteous God.

Reader: A Reading from the Book of Acts 11:27-12:3
At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that
according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.)

The Holy Gospel Matthew: 20:20-28
Officiant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Officiant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People: Glory to you Lord Christ.
The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favor of him. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
Officiant: The Gospel of the Lord
People: Praise to you Lord Christ.

The Sermon

Song of Praise, Shall we gather at the river
Shall we gather at the river
where bright angels' feet have trod,
with its crystal tides forever
flowing by the throne of God?

Refrain
Yes, we'll gather at that river,
the beautiful, the beautiful river.
Gather with the saints at that river
that flows by the throne of God.

When we reach that shining river
we'll lay every burden down.
Then grace our spirits will deliver
and will receive our robe and crown.

Refrain
Yes, we'll gather at that river,
the beautiful, the beautiful river.
Gather with the saints at that river
that flows by the throne of God.

Soon we'll reach that silver river.
Soon our pilgrimage will cease.
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
with the melody of peace.

Refrain
Yes, we'll gather at that river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river.
Gather with the saints at that river
that flows by the throne of God.

Oh, yes, we'll gather at that river
That flows by the throne of God,
that flows by the throne of God.

The Nicene Creed
Officiant and People together:
We believe in one God,
   the Father, the Almighty,
   maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
   the only Son of God,
   eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
   true God from true God,
   begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
       he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
       and was made man.
   For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
           in accordance with the Scriptures;
       he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hymn 530 Spread, O spread thou mighty word
Spread, O spread, thou mighty word,
spread the Kingdom of the Lord.
That to earth’s remotest bound
all may heed the joyful sound.

Word of how the Savior’s love
Earth’s sore burden doth remove.
How forever, in its need
through His death the world is freed.

Word of life, most pure and strong,
word for which the nations long,
spread abroad until from night
all the world awakes to light.

Officiant: Let us go forth in the Name of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia.
People: Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
