HEADMASTER UPDATE

A few weekends ago, I learned it is true! When a good habit is formed from an early age, but a child departs from it, there is a chance they will return to what is good. From an early age, my son loved to read. When it was past his bedtime, I would begrudgingly pull books out of his hands and demand him to stop reading. As he reached his high school years, he stopped reading for pleasure, and that continued through most of college. As an avid reader, former teacher, and mother, this made me sad. But I am not sad anymore! I came home and found my son and his girlfriend sitting on the couch, silently looking down. At first, I thought they were engrossed in their cell phones like so many young adults often are, but they were both captivated by the book. His love for reading is back!

Last week we aspired to acknowledge reading and classical books in an effort to reignite a true love of reading. To accomplish this, we had various sixth grade students highlight a favorite book during morning announcements. It was a unique opportunity for our younger scholars to hear from their older peers. The love for reading these sixth-grade scholars displayed was contagious, and the whole school was excited about literature! My favorite event of the week was DEAR. Every day last week, I would get on the intercom and randomly announce, “It is now DEAR time! Drop Everything And Read!" All the ANP scholars and staff would stop what they were doing and read for 15 minutes. I noticed the scholars and staff carrying their books with them around campus always prepared in anticipation of this announcement.

The ANP staff also readily gave out "I Caught You Reading" slips to the scholars choosing to read at recess, after an in-class assignment, and even at lunch! The children were able to put those slips into a box by the library each day. To my surprise, the box of slips was completely full by week's end. I drew three names out of the box to receive a free book from the book fair. Speaking of the book fair - thanks to you, we made $5000 from the book fair sales. We will be using the money to get books for the classrooms and other much-needed supplies for our ESS team. It was a joy to see families looking at books together and scholars excitedly walking out with armfuls of books. The week ended with our beloved tradition, Literature Day. Young scholars marched around campus sharing their carefully thought-out costumes representing their favorite classical characters in our traditional costume parade. The day continued with snacks and activities centered around the great books. The excitement was evident as I visited different classrooms throughout the day.

I hope the events last week contributed to cultivating a deep love of reading, a love that will translate into a habit as they grow older. It will develop a sense of the world around them, develop their moral imagination, and unlock the door to lifelong learning. As Fredrick Douglas said, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”

ANP FALL/WINTER CONCERT
The music team is thrilled to announce our annual fall/winter concert of the year. Our students are already working hard on their repertoire, and they are excited! This year, the concert will be spread over seven weeks by grade level. The dates are below:

  • November 9, Third Grade
  • November 16, Second Grade
  • November 30, Fifth Grade
  • December 7, Sixth Grade

The concert will be held in the Archway MPR shortly after dismissal. The performing students will remain with their homeroom teachers and will be escorted down to the MPR as a class with their belongings. You are welcome to pick-up siblings at regular dismissal to attend your student(s) concert.

The Paradise Valley Baptist Church has graciously allowed us to utilize their parking lot for these events. If you are attending the concert, please park in their parking lot (off of Hearn) instead of the ANP parking lot to avoid lengthening the dismissal procedures. Performances will begin at 3:50 pm and doors to the MPR will open at 3:40 pm. Please line up along the glass window prior to admission.

Please inquire with your student’s music teacher if your student is absent for their performance, and or you have any questions about the performance.
