The Homestead Neighborhood Association will meet Tuesday, October 1 from 7-9pm.

Meetings are held at the CDRC, 707 SW Gaines, 3rd floor.

The October agenda will include the presentation, Portland Crow Roost Talk given by Gary Granger and Rebecca Provorse. The talk (1-1.5 hours) includes the

f ollowing components:

--Role of the American Crow in urban ecology

--History of crow roosts, persecution and transition to urban areas,

--Details about our community science project, urban ecology and bird activism,

--Data on the Portland urban crow roost, and

Josh Mahar and Fiona Cundy from Tri-Met presented an update of the SW Corridor Project. The costs for this project are exceeding expectations and it is apparent that cost reductions will be needed.   While the goal is to focus on cost reductions that will achieve the "full-length" project, there is a chance that the project may be built in phases. Either way the project scope is being considered with the following changes:

In October the project scope will be defined to be included with the regional transportation measure in 2020.

The Homestead NET has successfully mapped 50 houses in the trial area and is now ready to extend the block categories. OHSU is planning to prepare a written statement on OHSU's response and role in the event of a disaster in our area. Block Captains will be meeting in September to expand the mapping area. The topic equity and inclusion in the Homestead NA was briefly discussed. How can Homestead ensure that all residents feel welcome and included? We briefly talked about engaging more renters, those needing transportation and ways in which to make it possible for young families to participate. This topic will be revisited. The Homestead Parks Committee Chair position is vacant and Homestead is  l ooking to fill   this  position. The Parks Committee Chair represents the Homestead n eighborhood as the main Homestead contact for receiving Parks information and informs the neighborhood association at monthly meetings of issues affecting Homestead.

This position also represents the neighborhood association as a member of the SWNI Parks and Community Centers Committee. This group works to provide information at the larger neighborhood coalition level and votes as the Homestead Representative. Meetings are held  monthly on the first Thursday of each month at Multnomah Arts Center from 7-8:30 pm. Updates from this group are provided to Homestead members at our monthly meetings.

The City of Portland has approved an OHSU application to construct approximately 220 new patient and guest parking spaces as part of its proposed hospital expansion project.  The spaces will be located in a proposed new patient care building on Campus Drive.   The Homestead neighborhood Association had opposed the parking spaces addition because of concerns over increased traffic.  The other aspects of the expansion construction project are subject to additional City reviews and are unopposed.

Wilson High School Community Conversation

The Hillsdale NA is co-hosting a Community Conversation with Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran about incidents of racism and anti-Semitism that have taken place at Wilson High School and concerns about student health and safety.  Wilson High School students, parents, Portland Public Schools administration, board members and interested community members are invited.  The Community Conversation will be held Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 6:00 pm, Multnomah Arts Center Auditorium, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97216.

Proposed Amendment to Administrative Rule for Accessory Short-Term Rentals

The Bureau of Development Services is proposing to amend administrative rules related to enforcement of Accessory Short-Term Rentals (ASTRs) that are allowed by the Portland Zoning Code Chapter 33.207. The proposed amendments:

• clarify that the fine amount for the first violation may be set by the BDS fee schedule adopted annually by City Council, consistent with the fines for second and third offenses; and
• clarify that the administrative rule applies to both Type A and Type B ASTRs.

The Portland Marathon will take place Oct 6, 2019. The route does not directly affect Homestead, but Naito and SW 1st will be part of or near the marathon route. Route and additional information regarding streets near the Homestead area can be found here.

Interested in helping Homestead NA earn some dollars? All neighborhood associations (including those that are not on the actual race route) are invited to participate in the OHSU Neighborhood Cheer Challenge.

 

"Here's how it works:

 

If your association decides to participate, you will be assigned a spot on the race course to take over and demonstrate your neighborhood's personality. You are encouraged to bring signs, play  music, decorate, and most importantly CHEER on the runners and help them have an  unforgettable experience.

 

After the race, runners will vote on their favorite groups and the top five neighborhood

associations will win $500 each, with the first place group taking home the grand prize of

$1,000. There is no limit or requirement on the number of people who need to participate, and  there is no fee to participate."
