Congregant of the Year – Susan McHugh
I am pleased to announce that Susan McHugh is being honored as Congregation Shalom’s 2019 Congregant of the Year in recognition of her long history of making volunteerism to our community a central part of her life. She is a person who has made significant contributions to the well-being of our community over many years. A list cannot really articulate the level of passion, love, and commitment she has made in our congregation.
Susan is currently the co-chair of our Social Action & Justice committee. Since attending the RAC Consultation on Conscience in the spring of 2017, she has been the primary force behind growing our Social Justice efforts, both within our walls and in collaboration with other community groups. To list just a few of her accomplishments in this area, she organized both of our One Book programs – this year’s book was on the topic of white supremacy and last year’s was about criminal justice reform; she spearheaded the showing of the movie “13
th
” about racial inequality in our nation’s prisons; she has participated in registering newly naturalized citizens to vote; and much more.
Susan is a former chair of our Membership Committee, has served on the Board of Trustees multiple times, and was even a teacher in our religious school. She has actively assisted on programming for all twenty annual Sisterhood Retreats, and has attended nearly all of them. She performed at our Moth Story Night, telling a wonderful story about her wedding. She was also a member of our first adult B’nai Mitzvah class. The list goes on, but you get the point.
Susan is a warm, welcoming, passionate, energetic supporter of our community. Susan’s passion and commitment are contagious! We have all benefitted because of her involvement and love of the congregation. Thank you, Susan, from a grateful community.

The House Committee owes a big thank you to all volunteers that spent some time helping to improve the appearance of our temple. We got considerably more work done than expected due to the hard work of so many volunteers.
Additional thanks goes to Linda Lischer and Mitch Hyatt for their additional support with design and planning for this event.
A special thanks goes to Josh Degan who brought his heavy equipment to make the day possible.
